I really wouldn't.

The 240 BHP Astra VXR has so much power to the front wheels it's almost undriveable at its full potential due to the torque steer. I was looking at one the other day . . . but it's just too mad . . . :(

I imagine the Corsa would be even worse?

Lovely cars to drive, piss all over its counterparts like Clios, 306s, Polo GTIs, Golf TDIs etc

VXR will be up there with the 206 GTIs and Clio Sports of the world although not quite as powerful as a Golf R32 sadly.

Yeah I've read about the Astra, though they may 'iron out' those issues by next year perhaps? - see how it goes anyway.

As is the Vectra VXR, Top Gear tested it in the last series and Clarkson ripped it apart. However its faster than a BMW M5 in a straight line, but as soon as you come to a bend your dead.

Get the Zafira VXR if you really want a VXR, apparently thats the only decent one, and then not even as good as Fords new S Max.

Standard. I think the Works kicks out 210bhp and the new GP version is 225bhp (or something like that). They only released 2000 GP's worldwide with 445 to the UK which were snapped up very quickly. The guy who owned the one I have just had traded it in for a GP. I would imagine they are frighteningly fast.

200bhp form a Corsa will be a bit shit your pants scary to drive. Saw on that link a 240bhp Punto coming out as well :eeek

True, but Clarkson being Clarkson he turned off the traction control on the Vectra, then slaughtered it for handling poorly?

True, i was also surprised when he slated the Astra VXR for being too wild and again with the handling of a donkey.

Both the Astra and Vectra are cars i like, and if i had the cash i would consider, however, Fords generally have better chassis and handle a hell of a lot better than GM based cars. If i did have that sort of cash i wouldn't buy either and would instead buy a Fast Audi A4 the RS4.

Clarkson actually likes the Astra! (http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,12529-1639718_1,00.html)

"But the three-door Astra hatchback is different. Quite apart from the meaningful stance and the Brad Pitt body, it has an air of quality you certainly wouldn’t expect from a Vauxhall, or indeed any car in this part of the marketplace."

That Astra is an attractive looking little bomb, I must say. We don't actually have Vauxhalls over here anymore, that brand was absorbed into General Motors some years ago. And audio is right--Bimmer drivers over here are also miserable, useless pricks. And don't get me started on Volvo drivers...:angryfire

Me?? For work I steer a GMC Savana(full-size van), small-block V8 beast. For the weekend a Pontiac Vibe, sort of a mini-SUV cousin to the Toyota Matrix(they share chassis and drivetrain). About 130 HP out of an inline four, it'll do 130 on the highway all day and not be thirsty about it...:thumb

Why in the blue hell would you want a FORD over ANY car?

That shitty engine management system is attrocious, attempt to go round a corner in second and the thing cuts out half the time. Its the same with the newer TXII taxis, they use ford engines with that management system, every cabbie i know who got one, replaced it with a TXI

Over the years i have had two Fords, an old Sierra (years ago now) and a mark 1 Mondeo, i didn't have any problems with either, both proved reliable and trust worthy, and both lasted me three years plus each, the Mondeo was the best car i have owned myself so far, and it was the best to drive too. That shape Mondeo brought a fun driving/handling experience to the masses, despite the dreary image it was fun to drive, best cornering car in its class.

I never had any problems engine wise at all with either of them. As i said i have a Vauxhall now, and that has had no end of little niggly problems with it, all electrical (touch wood they have all been sorted now) and its not the best car to drive, its comfy but its useless soft handling is that of a comedy car (i bought the wrong one though to be fair, an 1.6i LS).

I am sure the new Astra is a much better ride if you buy the top end specced one's, however i have driven a few Fords recently, along with some others while i have been looking for a new car, i can tell you the 52 plate (ish) mk1 Focus in TDCI form is very good indeed, brilliant handling and more grunt than is needed. However i am not a fan of its styling, that is why i am looking for a current Mondeo TDCI, these also have excellant handling, and plenty of space for all my fishing gear. I drove a 2.0ltr Laguna the other day, they are quite nice to drive, but i hear bad things over the electrics in those.

Gumpy Joe
18th August 2006, 09:59
I've just had a Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI as a courtesy car. Very fast when the turbo kicks in. Very good handling, just grips like hell on bends. Only thing about it is it has a bit of road noise on the motorway, but i just turn up the radio anyway.

If the 1.8 TDCI is this fast, i wonder what the ST 2.5 duratec is like?
