I got into a heated debate over xmas with a mate over the whole left hand / right hand plane disembarkation thing.
So I've written a letter to the Civil Aviation Authority.
They should be able to clear it up.

I think it was the left. Why would this bother/interest anyone in the slightest?

On the way back from Edinburgh we had 17 passengers on the plane. We were mostly sat around the middle seats and before the plane started they asked for 2 volunteers to sit at the front. I want an explanation......

I didn't want to risk sending the stewardess into hours of thought when the flight was only due to last 25 minutes.

Crouchy. Hope you don't have MI5 on your tail. They may think(in these paranoid times) that you are a-would be terrorist.
Now where's my tin hat.

I'm not sure it beats my letter to nestlé asking if i could possibly get a random packet of all orange smarties. They sent me a splendid description of how brown smarties used to be coffee flavoured, a free blood orange flavoured kit kat (a little random) and then dashed my hopes by saying it was impossible that the machine would allow such a freak packet.
Then this xmas, they're selling big packets of all orange smarties.
I think they owe me!!

OK, for your entertainment - I tried to word it as eloquently as possible...
I wonder if you could settle an argument.
Having undertaken several air journeys during the past year, I don’t believe I have ever embarked or disembarked an aircraft on the right hand side. Having noticed this, I have asked several aircrews who could come up with no better guess other than “the food comes on that way”.
My colleagues suggested it may be because of refuelling and baggage procedures being performed on the right hand side, but this also proved to be false at several airports, as everything seemed to happen on one side.
Is there a reason for this left-handedness, and is there any airport in the UK or even in the world where the passengers disembark from the right hand side?
There is indeed money riding on your eagerly awaited answer.
Yours,
Lets see what happens. I suspect they'll shred it.
I'm gonna see if I can dig out that letter I got back from the French President's Office when I wrote asking about their policies in West Africa.
That was a classic.

The results are in - I'm picking up the responding letter from the CAA from work tomorrow. I'll post what they have to say on here.
I've thought of something else though.
What do they do to 'processed peas' that make them like they are? I feel a letter to Farrow's brewing.

is the "galley" not on the right hand side? this would mean that they could open the right door to take on new deliveries of food whilst passengers disembark without getting in passengers' way

is that the left looking at the plane from the front or the back
plus its better to vary the exits as it ensures all the dooirs work , just in case

Just to put this to bed:
"I have been passed your letter dated 12 January 2007 for response. I can only speak for the UK - I would have no expert knowledge of other countries - Russian aircraft and airports for example may be different.
Passenger aircraft are built to facilitate both boarding of passengers and loading of baggage, cargo, catering and fuel. For that reason, all passenger aircraft are built with the cargo/baggage doors on the right hand side. The entry/exit doors on the left are usually larger to facilitate easy access by passengers and the doors on the right are smaller as they are designed to just allow access by catering units etc. This makes for a more effective and speedy turn-around. Most aircraft refuel right hand side only but some of the newer Airbuses have the facility to refuel on the left.
Also, all UK airports have boarding piers that are designed to atach to the left hand side of an aircraft."
