SHIZUOKA — A 54-year-old man riding a motorcycle had his right leg severed below the knee in a collision with a road center divider on Monday morning, but continued on for two kilometers before noticing his injury, TV media reported Tuesday. Police said that Kazuo Nagata, a company employee, told them he was unaware of the loss of his leg apparently because his attention was focused on the strong pain he felt from the crash.
Nagata said he failed to negotiate a left turn and hit the center divider in a west-bound lane of Route 1's Hamana bypass in Hamamatsu. Nagata, who was on his way to Gifu Prefecture with 10 friends, did not notice that part of his leg was missing until they arrived at an interchange a few minutes later. One of his companions went back to pick up the severed leg, while other members of the group called for an ambulance.
