India's financial capital and amongst the biggest cities in the world, Mumbai, has been targetted by terrorists again. Initial reports suggest 4 serial blasts in different parts of the city(Vile Parle, Santa Cruz, a top restaurant among others) and some terrorists have managed to get into two of the well known 5 star hotels, the Taj and Oberoi with AK-47's. They have been firing blindly and now the Police have cordoned off the areas. There are 9 places in this city where firing is still going on between the terrorists and the police.

This is the first time that besides serial blasts, terrorists have come out in the open and that to in a city like Mumbai. When will these imbecile twats understand they will gain nothing by killing innocent people. To see your people die like this is unbearable. Why doesn't India target terrorist camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan? For how ****ing long do we bear this bloodshed! The US has started operations inside Pakistan, what are we waiting for! I've had enough of this sh*t. Terrorists should be burnt alive.

And you know what... after Iraq, India has had the most number of casualties due to terror strikes. Why do they do this? Don't they have a heart? Isn't there anyone in their lives whom they love and care about? Why Mumbai... hardly had we gotten over the serial blasts in local trains and we get this... if terrorists can do this to a massive city like Mumbai, no place in this world is safe.

Should this crime have been carried out by Pakistani militants the already fragile situation in Pakistan could really blow up.

Mumbai rocked by deadly attacks

Eyewitness reaction and local TV footage from the scene

Gunmen have carried out a series of co-ordinated attacks across the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 80 people and injuring 250 more.

At least seven high-profile locations were hit in India's financial capital, including two luxury hotels where hostages are reported to be held.

A fire has destroyed part of the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai's most famous hotel, which is now ringed by troops.

Police said four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested.

Flames and black smoke billow from the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, Mumbai

Attacks leave India reeling
Witnesses tell of violence
In pictures: Mumbai attacks

As day broke in Mumbai, the situation on the ground was still confused with reports of gunfire and explosions at between seven and 16 locations.

The city's main commuter train station, a hospital, a restaurant and two hotels - locations used by foreigners as well as local businessmen and leaders - are among those places caught up in the violence.

Commandos have now surrounded the two hotels, the Taj Mahal Palace and the Oberoi Trident, where it is believed that the armed men are holding dozens of hostages.

A BBC correspondent outside the Taj Mahal Palace said there had been a series of gun shots between police and the armed men, and that 11 officers were killed in the skirmishes.

Eyewitness reports suggest the attackers singled out British and American passport holders.

If the reports are true, our security correspondent Frank Gardner says it implies an Islamist motive - attacks inspired or co-ordinated by al-Qaeda.
See detailed map of the area

A claim of responsibility has been made by a previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen.

Our correspondent says it could be a hoax or assumed name for another group.

The motive is far from clear - but the attacks come amid elections in several Indian states, including in disputed Kashmir.

In the latest developments:

• Fire crews are evacuating people from the upper floors of the Taj Mahal Palace, from where smoke can still be seen billowing although the blaze has been extinguished

• The head of Mumbai's anti-terrorism unit and two other senior officers are among those killed, officials say

• The White House holds a meeting of top intelligence and counter-terrorism officials, and pledges to help the Indian government.

Gunmen opened fire at about 2300 local time (1730 GMT) at the sites in southern Mumbai.

Mumbai journalist: "Gunmen were looking for Westerners"

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed," said AN Roy, police commissioner of Maharashtra state.

Local TV images showed blood-splattered streets, and bodies being taken into ambulances.

One eyewitness told the BBC he had seen a gunman opening fire in the Taj Mahal's lobby.

"We all moved through the lobby in the opposite direction and another gunman then appeared towards where we were moving and he started firing immediately in our direction."

One British tourist said she spent six hours barricaded in the Oberoi hotel.

BOMB ATTACKS IN INDIA IN 2008
30 October: Explosions kill at least 64 in north-eastern Assam
30 September: Blasts in western India kill at least seven
27 September: Bomb blasts kills one in Delhi
13 September: Five bomb blasts kill 18 in Delhi
26 July: At least 22 small bombs kill 49 in Ahmedabad
25 July: Seven bombs go off in Bangalore killing two people
13 May: Seven bomb hit markets and crowded streets in Jaipur killing 63

International reaction

"There were about 20 or 30 people in each room. The doors were locked very quickly, the lights turned off, and everybody just lay very still on the floor," she said.

There has been a wave of bombings in Indian cities in recent months which has left scores of people dead.

Most of the attacks have been blamed on Muslim militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists.

Mumbai itself has also been attacked in the past: in July 2006 a series of bomb attacks on busy commuter trains killed almost 190 people and injured more than 700.

Police accused Pakistan's intelligence agency of planning those attacks, which they said were carried out by an Islamist militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Pakistan rejected the allegation, saying there was no evidence that its intelligence staff were involved.

But the latest shootings come at a time when ties between India and Pakistan have improved.

Just days ago Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari told a summit in Delhi that Pakistan would not be first to carry out a missile strike on India.

The two countries have a joint anti-terror mechanism whereby they are supposed to share information on terrorist attacks.

3- Nariman House -- Majority of the terrorists(6) are holed up here..the army has taken charge here...An Israeli family is bieng held hostage here...

One terrorist still holed up inside the Taj... remaining are reported to be shot dead. One of them has been caught alive. While Pakistan has denied any role in the attacks, there are indications of a possible link from accross the border. The NSG commandos are gearing up for a massive operation in Nariman house where around 3-5 terrorists have held an Israeli and an Indian family hostage. Firing is still going on in the Oberoi hotel.

The hostages in Nariman house have been rescued and a fierce encounter is taking place between the cops and the terrorists. The encounter at the Taj is intensifying... the number of terrorists holed up seem to be more than previously thought. Oberoi and Nariman House have been freed but unfortunately, 5 hostages in Nariman house were killed by those imbecile twats. The number of deceased has increased to 156 and could rise alarmingly. Experts say the terrorists could be on drugs and painkillers.

EDIT:- The situation in Taj seems to be extremely serious. There's an eerie silence at the moment and the number of terrorists holed up seems to be more than 3-4! There seems to be something which's obstructing the NSG's swift movement. There seems to be no hostages but wonder why then it's taking so much time. Additional forces entered the Taj sometime back.

Yes, they are only left in the Taj. But they are really difficult to bring down. They seem to be changing locations swiftly and considering there are about 800 rooms accross so many floors and that too in the dead of night(it's around 3.30 am here), it only gets difficult. In addition, they are equipped with grenades and sophisticated weapons. They could've planted them on the floor.

Well if they put people on the stairs, and stop the elevators, then they can only really stay on on floor.

Electricity has been cut off in most sections of the Taj... the operation has slowed down a bit now... maybe they are waiting for dawn to start full fledged operation, I don't know. The DG of NSG had said the operation would be over this night, but by the looks of it that seems unlikely.

EDIT:- Fresh firing heard from inside the Taj... a terrorist spotted.

My parents have been watching this closely. It's been a shocking few days to say the least - India has been rocked. It's disgraceful. And Andu, I'm really sorry about your dads friend. :( IG and Andu, just keep yourselves and your family safe man.

RIP to the dead. May the terrorists burn in hell.

theres reports that some of the terrorists were british born pakistanis , thatll lead to some interesting reprisals
India wants to handle this itself , which is commendable , but we all need to stand up to this sort of cowardly act carried out by brain washed nutters, who think their particular religion is better and 64 virgins are waiting in paradise, the gullability is mind boggling

I was thinking something similar this morning. Bring in 'Internment' for British Muslims and weed out the bad eggs.
In other words round them all up forcefully and sort the wheat from the chaff.

What did you expect mate?

Well as of last night the foreign minister had confirmed that the ISI chief ( read Terrorist in Chief ) would be sent to India

The supposedly Liberal lot are allready advocating that the peace talks should go on with pakistan
:angryfire

I would want to break of all peace talks with pakistan ..untill they take some tangible action against terrorism

The peace talks are a waste of time if pakistan continue to harbor such anti-social elements

It doesnt make a f@ck of difference if these are rouge elements or the top administration knew about all this ..

Normally i dont give a f@ck whether pakistan is doomed or not ...but when it starts affecting my country at such a scale...I would want my govt to pursue all avenues possible to put their bloody house in order

I know that the ISI chief is being sent, heard it on the radio this morning. If peace talks with a foreign state, with which India already has disputes with, are cancelled because of these terrorist attacks then the terrorists have won.

Pakistan are taking action against terrorists, dozens of armed forces have been killed in action fighting the fanatics in lawless regions. The problem is, even if the Pakistani forces had the power to take over the lawless regions, which they don't, the moderates can never reverse the indoctrination installed into the radical youth.

Pakistan aren't habouring terrorists in the same sense as Afghanistan was in regard to 'Al-Qaeda' and company. It's not as if the Pakistani state wants these organisations in their country. In my opinion it does matter. 'British' citizens were apparently involved in these attacks. What if they trained in the New Forest? Would you suggest breaking ties with Britain?

Exactly. The best course of action the Indian government can take is to work closely with Pakistan, possibly to the extent where India has access to the best intelligence and even are allowed to carry out covert strikes. In my opinion, the Pakistani government are allowing the US to make these strikes in Pakistan and the shooting down of drones are just for show, to prevent serious opposition to the government.

I think the worst thing India can do now is to isolate Pakistan and miss out on the opportunity to bridge relations with the Pakistani state and really challenge the extremist elements. That's just my opinion though and I can see what you're saying, especially having witnessed first hand what you have.

This only on the NWFP...and only because of pressure America put on them
Terror camps blatantly operate in POK. The amount of evidence given to pakistan on this matter is almost ridiculous..to say Pakistan is taking ample action against terror camps is laughable..specially with the impunity the LET and JEM operate in Pakistan.

I would if there was evidence that the MI6 was helping these terrorists.
Thats exactly what the ISI is doing.
Probably the most obvious example would be Dawood Ebrahim...He has been protected by the ISI for a long long time..and inspite of evidence to this point..no effort has been made to deport him to India
One more example would be the JEM head Maulana Massood who was released during the IC-814 hijacking ...he went to pakistan ...and stll operates out of POK

True ...I really think this is a great opportunity to build bridges with Pakistan...but how is this too happen?? Summit after summits ? or maybe a couple of train and rail links...One would think if Pakistan wanted to build bridges..they would have sent the ISI chief to India

Again, all fair points. At this conjucture it's also relevant to bring up the fact that the ISI wired Mohammed Atta $100,000 just before 9/11.

It's time for action. Enough is enough! Right from the attack on our Parliament to this deadly attack on Mumbai there have been Pakistani links. For how long do you expect us to bear them and their fake condolences? We've always tried to better relations with them inspite all odds, but they always back stab us. This time too they've done this. How long do we see our people die for no damn fault of theirs? The world knows Pakistan shelters terrorists. Even underworld don Dawood Ibrahim is sheltered in Karachi and India had even submitted the proof of that to Pakistan but they have refused to act. Why are we so soft on terror? If we were Israel we would have slammed them hard and rightly so. I know their President Zardari lost his wife due to terrorism. But it's only because of his nation's inability to keep in check the growing number of terrorist camps in his territory and the support of ISI to these inhuman twats.

It's time the world isolates Pakistan until it does something concrete to drive away this menace. They can't do it themselves and when the US asks them to help they deny saying it would be against their sovereignty. Every nation which shelters terrorism in any form, no matter if it's Bangladesh, Pakistan or any other nation, should be brought to task.

I admit, intelligence failure on our side too was responsible for this tragedy. But that doesn't justify what Pakistan has done.

If the terrorists have such support in the ISI as you imply then without support from western nations and their allies the moderate regime(s) would fall and the terrorists would conquer. How do you feel about these morons having their finger on the nuclear trigger?

Indian Gunner

Thats the reason why the US has started attacking camps in Pakistan to which Pakistan has objected. It's highly unlikely that those twats would manage to get hold of nuclear installations, but after what I saw in Mumbai, these guys could reach anywhere!

If the moderates in Pakistan were, as you put earlier, left in total isolation there's a very good chance that the Government would be overthrown by radical elements. Those radical elements would assume control of the country and thus the nuclear weapons.

Thats the thing now

Finding middle ground...

Heres how I see it Pakistan has failed miserably to curtail extremists elements in its country to such a large extent that there is real doubt about who is calling the shots

There is no doubt that we need to be gentle with our allies in the Govt and at the same time arm twist them into giving us the leads we need..

I mean this really is worst case scenario...one doesn't know the good from the bad and the Indian subcontinent could really become the flash point for another major war

I also really think the Govt needs to pull up its act regarding national security and vote bank politics :angryfire For all the criticism Bush got..there was no doubt that he was the man in charge...no such clarity in our system

Its easy to point the finger at Pakistan and have the worlds sympathy on your...but I dont give a shit about that if I have to think twice before traveling by the local trains ....

As someone that has been in London on 7/7 I can understand what those in Mumbai are going through. Stay strong. The terrorists deserve being executed but no form of execution is good enough for them. Let them starve in a perspex cage with food and drink just out of it but they can't get it.

I've been following this on both the Beeb and LCI.....

Tragic truely tragic......But I feel that Indian forces were maybe slow to react to the impending and events that have now passed......I understand it is a sensitive area in asia and maybe that is why the attacks were targeted there as the secret services and the proximity is close......

France at the moment is on alert rouge probably the same as in the UK.......Terror strikes happen in random places as seen in years past with the IRA and also after declaring a ceasefire the Spanish Basque group have once again with militants fighting for their cause......Corsica is often hit aswell......

I suggest a rapid response of special forces unit be formed
and based in several places around the globe to intervene at the slightest attacks...I mean within an easy distance of reaching such a situation in the quickest time possible....Namely one all the continets....

These faceless cowardly bastards who have been brainwashed into their actions need to see the red laser target shot aimed at the head.......Take no shit, no disable shots to the legs, they plan to kill so should our special forces......placing down the arm and hands up....bolloxs to that.....

Mumbai has suffered an attack just as New York, London, Madrid, Paris, Indonesia to name a few major targets....

I would have no hesitation in putting a bullet in the head even if the person was on his knees, cuffed and his firearm not in reach......

Apparently, media sources say the Government is determined to act tough this time. The cease fire with Pakistan could be called off and there is a possibility of multiplying army deployments on the border. There are reports that Pakistan could also do that first.

If the moderates in Pakistan were, as you put earlier, left in total isolation there's a very good chance that the Government would be overthrown by radical elements. Those radical elements would assume control of the country and thus the nuclear weapons.

Thats least possible mate. If Pakistan truely wants, it can drive away terrorists, but it's beacause of the lack of will and ISI support that the terrorists have found heaven in Pakistan. Now, by isolation I meant economic isolation. Freezing of trade, financial assistance and supply of defence equipment and so on. But at the same time super powers like the US, France and others should put constant diplomatic pressure on Pakistan. Pakistan doesn't allow foreign elements to assist them in terror operations even now, so the threat of terrorists having access to nuclear instalments exists even now.
