Football can be really boring when its not your team playing. Cricket is a nice way to relax and get plastered inside an English sporting stadium and not get called a yob for doing so.

Congrats to all the English folk out there. Very interesting game, sure I'm disappointed, I think the rain on the 4th day was a turning point. If it hadn't rained the Aussies would've batted on and probably posting a required total of 500+. However, it rained, Gilly declared and Butcher and Hussain both batted well for the win.
Just another pointless fact:
Of the top nine players in English cricket batting averages, six are Australian.
There are the touring players in Damien Martyn (754 runs at 107.71), Adam Gilchrist (619 at 103.16) and Simon Katich (773 at 91.00)
Then there are those who are playing with counties such as Darren Lehmann (1222 at 87.28), Mike Hussey (1352 at 71.15)and Stuart Law (1060 at 70.66). Pretty impressive once you think about it.

First of all, England has the longest tail in world. Secondly, England's previous highest 4th innings score at Headingly is something like 215. (estimate, it is low 200's) Thirdly, you really think that England would've made 500+ in 60 overs (which is how much time they probably would've had.) Surely not, especially with McGrath, Gillispie, Warne and Lee.
I'm not taking anything away from the English victory, Butcher batted brilliantly. However, Gilchrist could've quite easily batted on and forced the game to a draw. Or at least put a win for England out of the question. To his credit, he decleared, put the game up for grabs, and gave the crowd something to watch when they entered the gates. I think Gilly's decision was brilliant.
Oh and Sulliano, don't make me compare middle and lower order with you, I think most sane people would take Australia's middle order over England's. Remember we too had 4 wickets down and the 4 wickets we lost were due to the fact that we were after quick runs.

No im not arguin at that at all, i was jus sayin that there was still Alec Stewart 2 cum in and i feel he wudve bin capable of stikin in there and lettin Butcher free score

Adam Gilchrist was captain, when I said he could've batted on for a draw, I implied that he as captain could've instead of sending his team out to bat for quick runs. He could have made them bat within themselves and not declare.
Also as well as Butcher batted, you have to remember that its not easy to bat for long periods of time. He would have become tired and probably thrown his wicket away. Looking back, you don't see many double centuries plus scored. Sure Butcher may have got there, but I question whether he would have gone much further.

Ah rite, c wot ya mean on that Gilchrist point now, but i spose its still relevant wot i sed, the fact that him and the tail werent in quite as such form they hve bin
And judgin by the way Butcher pegged it off the pitch, id say he was still rather energetic <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

At the MCG, we get between 50,000 and 90,000 for the Boxing Day test. That is for the first day, although it's been a while since we've had over 80,000 though. Probably mid nineties when the Windies were stronger. As for the other ground in Australia we usually get between 30,000 and 50,000.
In Aussie Rules Football we get about 80,000 to the blockbuster matches through the year and the finals and Grand Final you're looking at 90,000 plus. The MCG record is 121,000 approx. which was set in the 1970's. If everything goes to plan for the Commonwealth Games in 2006, Melbourne could have 6 stadiums at 30,000 plus and 3 or perhaps 4 of those 6 at 50,000 plus. This would really show that we are the true sporting capital of the world.

I went to a Collingword v Carlton game when I went to see family in Melbourne. It was a full house (about 90,000 ) but I didn't have a clue what was going on so it was quite shit.

Thats very impressive for a country that has a population smaller than London.
