Does everyone have these and test them regularly?

Theres 2 in our house, 1 in the hallway near the kitchen and every time the toaster is on and the door is left open the bloody thing goes off - and I'm not talking burnt toast either.

Still, better safe than sorry I spose.

I think it should be made law that everyhousehold should have at least one fitted on the premises...think of how many lives could be saved each year by having such a device fitted....OK they are a pain in the arse when they go off with minor things like the toaster but imagine if that toaster had a fault one day and it was unattended in the kitchen...
It has been proved smoke alarms save lives so if you ain't got one maybe ask father christmas for one this year...

2 in our house..

One by the kitchen like kampso said goes off EVERY time we cook regardless of burning something or not..

One on the landing upstairs.

Totally agree with Baz saying that it should be law to own one.

Yeah there's 2 in our house, one in the hall beside the kitchen, and one upstairs just outside my room.

We usually kept a battery in the one downstairs, but it went flat and was beeping every 5 mins  so I took it out and left the cover hanging down to remind me to get a new one.

However, my dickhead housemate put the cover back on properly because it was "annoying" him  and I forgot to then buy a new battery. A few weeks later the same dickhead housemate went out for a few drinks, came home and put half a field's worth of frozen chips in the oven and promptly fell asleep. Approximately 2 hours after his last waking action (around 4am) I woke up smelling the smoke  and thankfully nothing was yet on fire, but the chips were *aherm* so well done that you could do a nice lifesize charcoal sketch of City Hall with...

Next day BOTH smoke alarms got new batteries and are in full working order.

My housemate is an arsehole! :(

All new houses now have to have at least one smoke alarm before they are passed off by the building inspectors and they have to be mains powered.

I've also got two, upstairs and down and both mains.......don't trust those battery ones.

There's one in my house but I deactivated it because I smoke, otherwise I can't wander into the hall with a fag. I prioritise my habit over the safety of my house and person...

We have two, one in the arch from back room to living room and one on the landing, but if one goes off they both go off 9 in 10 cases, let the whole street know whats going on :)

No excuse mate.......you can get heat detectors that, as the name suggests, are activate by the rise in temperature.

Not as sensitive as a smoke alarm, but better than nothing.

i live in a bungalow so there's one in the hall, still goes off when cookin anythin tho

just seen an advert 2nite about making a plan for escape in case there's a fire, and for a family meeting point etc...does anyone have a plan?

spose if it was desperate i'd smash a window and get (carefully) though it, but i guess a plan could be important in a "normal" house with upstairs.

I always knew that smoke alarms used a small radioactive source inside them, but never really thought too much about their disposal.

Makes you wonder about all that stuff being dumped in municipal tips (or incinerated !).

Also, what happens if a warehouse full of these things goes up in flames (really hot !) ? Is the surrounding area covered in radioactive fallout ?!

Is this the next Al-Qaida target ?

I used to have one in the dining room, just outside the kitchen door but it kept going off when I was cooking and i hit it with the brrom and it broke. there is one in the hall too at the foot of the stairs and last time the battery went it started bleeping and i didn't realise what it was and it kept me awake all night and in the morning I phoned BT to complain cos I thought there was something wrong with my phone, and before you all laugh, the Bt guy asked if I had a smoke alarm and I said yeh and he said that it was that and they get calls like mine a lot.
