Just looking at sky news and it looks as if the Shuttle columbus has been destroyed on re-entry. Co-incidently it was the anniversary of the Challanger disaster earlier this week.

Very very sad, and my thoughts go out to the family of the crew who were on board. :(

looks very bad doesn't it.

condolences to the families of the astronauts. This shows how dangerous space travel still is today :(

:(

just switched sky news on...

but to be fair there cant be many claims that Space travel is dangerous as this is the first NASA Disaster since Challenger in 1986.. which is 17 years to this week

Does this have anything to do with terrorism?

I doubt it. there was an Isreali fighter pilot amongst the astronauts but its very unlikely IMO that this has anything to do with terrorism.

Apparantly there was a slight problem during take off but the mission was carried on with anyway, maybe that has something to do with it i dont know.

An awful tragedy.

Am I the only person to be watching the news and hearing that this shuttle crashed with the first Israeli astronaut, with much of the debris landing by .... Palestine (in the oil-rich state of Texas) ?

Just for once please keep your political rhetoric to yourself. Seven innocent people have just died here, whilst on a mission to help further mankinds understanding of space, and science. Whilst most people had started to see the space program as something almost routine, we should never forget the risks that people take each and every time they go into space.

Yes it's a dream for most, but this was a dream obtained by those who had put the motivation and dedication behind their bid to be one of the few. Now because of a tragic event, they have now paid for that dedication with their lives. Whatever your own current views on the political agendas being persued by various governments, this isn't the place to express them.

Godspeed to the crew of the Columbia... may they R.I.P. :(

May their gods be with them...RIP the magnificent seven.....

Just a note any posts on this thread which try to link this accident with any current political situations will be deleted...They are of absoloutly no relevance and totally un called for....Cheers folks

I see that a post of mine commenting upon the response of world leaders must have caused offence, and has been removed.

My aplogies to anyone offended -- it was actually meant to be satire.

a truely horrible disaster, but as goerge says we have to move forward which means we should be still hopeful for space travel in the future

Well I must be in a minority as I am not bothered by these deaths at all. We are talking about 7 people engaging in the most dangerous of activities voluntarily and probably dying very quickly. What about the innocent millions who starve to death every year?
