We've all heard about parents behaving badly at little league games, soccer matches and other sporting events.
Who could forget the father who beat another dad to death at their kids' hockey training session. Thomas Junta got six to 10 years after the dead man's son told the judge to "teach him a lesson."
Now a French father, apparently blinded by ambition for his children, has stepped over the line. Christophe Fauviau faces 20 years in jail, accused of administering a lethal dose of an antidepressant to one of his son's tennis rivals.

This story (apparently) is more than an isolated occurrence in places like the US. However, I have never heard of such extremes from our European cousins.
A friend of mine when asked why he detested the French so much only replied: "Cos of Agincourt"
I replied that Agincourt was almost 600 years ago but this tidbit of information concerned him not...

Why would an Englishman hate the French because of Agincourt? FFS, the Welsh won that battle for youse, with a score of around 6,000 to 150.
I like most French people apart from Parisiens (massive generalisation, I know). I find them gruff yet surprisingly courteous.

I don't hate the French at all. They hate us, of course, because we are a vastly superior nation and our languange is the world language instead of theirs. There's no point hating someone simply because of their petty jealousy of you, otherwise I'd hate the Scottish national football team.

Sorry Major, but I'm afraid hating the French is compulsary . . .

Will feeling revulsion and acting in a condescending manner towards them suffice?

Revulsion and condescension will do just fine.

I recently went to France on holiday, and found the people to be extremely friendly and not arrogant in the slightest(but its the Germans famous for that isn't it) Obviously there's a troubled history between the French and the English, but thats what it is: History! Anyway forget about the French and the Germans......it's the Turks now!!

Gotta agree with you there. Its like in England with people in major cities, they are so obnoxious and ignorant compared to people in smaller towns/suburbs/countryside (albeit a lot of countryside folk can be the same extreme).
Some of the nicest people ive met have been from france or germany, its just a stereotype that gets amplified and normal people get tarred with the same brush.

Is it only me or is there a dearth of French on this forum?
There was an interesting article in a US paper when the Iraqi war broke out. It went along the lines that, well basically, the French & Germans are all just cowardly scum. It seems that when there are major decisions to be made the French & Germans always sit on the fence. Abuse may be levelled my way but I'm just putting it as the article did.
These comments in no way mirror my own personal feelings or anyone attached to me hereto. :)

Danger...U.X.B
Rouen....Northern France 6th August 2003...11.30 hrs GMT
1,400 people evacuated from their homes following the discovery whilst work on new housing projects........using a JCB they uncovered a U.X.B.....weighing in at 120 US lbs.....the shell in a very sorry and unstable state was finally dis-armed after work from the bomb disposal squad on permanent alert in the Northern France area........
France after two world wars fought in their playground are pretty pissed off with what they have to deal with every other day in their northern regions.....on average 2 deaths or maiming per week....this from ordannance fired over 60 years ago...
Can you blame them for trying to use the diplomatic route??....**** me If I was a president or a prime minister.....I'd sure has hell try to veto any kind of warfare to sort out problems

I have to agree with this. I went to France thinking that they were going to be rude and arrogant as I couldn't speak their lingo and spoke English. But to my surprise they were the complete opposite. Maybe I was lucky, but I've never met a friendlier bunch of people. I think some of the people here read too many tabloid newspapers which always slag off the French. They aren't that bad.
If you want to meet people who are rude and have no civil courtesy, try southern Italy...

They didn't surrender in WWI and had a whole generation of men wiped out. Obviously we and everybody else suffered a lot too, but it was worst for them, north-east France was left a total wasteland. So, even though it may seem strange to us, you can see why they're not very militaristic anymore.
To be honest, I wish we British would demonstrate some independence and stop being America's little poodle all the time, it wouldn't hurt to assert our interests every now and then.

I don't have a problem with the French people rather their bent, scheming politicians.
Corrupt to their core (Elf court case) and always operating with a hidden agenda (British Beef ban) they are without doubt the biggest collection of cheese-eating surrender monkeys!!
