Patriotism flies high at the Civic Offices
LESS than a week into its new role in charge of Swindon Council, the Conservative group is already changing the decor at the Civic Offices.
New council leader Mike Bawden has ordered that the Union Jack be hoisted above the Euclid Street buildings.
It is the first time in the council's history that the national flag has been flown there on a permanent basis.
It has previously only been aired on special occasions, such as the Queen's birthday.
Coun Bawden (Old Town and Lawns) said: "We believe we ought to fly the Union Jack all the time, so we asked the officers to arrange it."
The council's lead member for finance, Coun Nick Martin (Con, Shaw and Nine Elms), stood with Coun Bawden as the flag was raised yesterday.
He said: "There's nothing wrong with being proud of being British. How many countries in the world have a proper democratic system? I think there's a great deal to puff your chest out about in this country."

They've had the Union flag flying over Portsmouth Civic Offices for as long as I can think back. We also have flags flying at all the local naval bases.
