I've been offered the chance to get training on X-Ray machines to detect explosives, offensive weapons etc by my company. I want to do it which will give me oppertunities to work at airports in the future. What I need to know is do the operators get much chance of getting radiation poisoning?

I know that the law states that you can only woork 20minute shifts when working on the machines, but that is due to concentration. Any ideas anyone?

I had a work experience assignment once at a local company that developed devices for the military that helped locate and determine the strength of chemicals/biological agents that may be encountered in combat situations. Part of the device was a very small radioactive element which had a specific role to play in the operation of this machine, and although it was a very tiny object in itself, and didn't emmit much in the way of radiation, they were still stored in a completley seperate part of the building, and had it's own proceedure when it came to adding said element to the piece of equipment being produced. All members of staff entering that particular part of the building had to wear a special badge which detected and stored the amount of radiation the wearer was exposed to, and this was routinely examined to make sure that over-exposure was not occuring.

The point I'm trying to make (albeit it in an extremely long winded way) is that if you're going to work with a radiation emmiting device, then obviouly you gonna be more subsceptable to radiation exposure than other people, however, the risk of it harming you in anyway is minimal, such are the precuations taken by employers when it comes to dealing with jobs that put you in that situation. It's not something you should really worry about, so just go for it if it's wot ya wanna do!

Id go for it Harry, however problems with these things would probably take prolonged (over years) exposure to a faulty machine that gave off too much emmissions. Do a bit of research on the net into the device you could be using and see what effects it may cause.

Now that does sound fun;)

Thanks people. I'll do the training to add to my CV. I could always go back to driving if I get bored!
