Looking to purchase a new printer mainly due to the cost of the cartridges/refills for my current one.
What printer would you recommend if you go through a fair amount of ink in a year?

Colour - Canon i865 or i990

they both use separate ink tanks, 6 in the printer, so if pink runs out you dont have to replace the entire colour catridge, just the pink one (or magenta as we say in the industry).
If your after a good all round printer:
HP PSC 2175 (or 2179 as they sell it in PC World). Will cost about £140 and uses the 56,57,58 range of Deskjet ink cartridges which are quite cheap, it has a good scanner, colour photocopier and printer itself of course!
Just remmeber if you do buy that one, do NOT connect it to your computer until the driver CD tells you to!
If your ****in loaded, go with what ive got :

A3+ pictures of Jenna jameson hanging on your wall.. this beauty could do that :D
Personally i'd recommend the i965 dude, go for it :)

I've had a Canon and have an Epson at the moment, but if I were to get a new printer I'd get an HP. The cartridges are more expensive, but that's because they have the head built on to them, and so the printer will have a much longer life span, and give top quality prints continuously.

Definitely HP.
I've had my 930c for 4 years, done a reasonable amount of colour printing with it, and never had any problems. It's relatively quick, very quiet and does very good quality pics and photographs.
The carts. look more expensive than Epson but are much bigger, and like Da says each has a new head on it so there are never any problems with clogging up. Remanufactured carts are also widely available.

I've got a Canon i250 and a colour cartridge is less than £2.30.

That is not strictly true any more. We have just brought some 1100d (business models to be fair) at work. These printers have seperate printheads and ink cartridges. Think the printheads are about £15 each and about the same again for an ink cartridge

Canons are utter shyte........With HP at the moment let's see how that goes

Lol.. let a man with experience of this sorta thing speak...
Epsons - Great ****ing quality, but i always encounter little installation issues with them, whether its the fact the printer sounds like your average factory floor before it prints, or the 10% of ink your not allowed to have because of the chip in the cartridge... However like Stret says, the printheads are in the printer itself, so if the cartridge ****s up, the printer needs an expensive replacement.
They make a mean laser printer, we use EPL-N3000's in work and had zero problems with them and good economy on the toner.
HP's - Always did choose Deskjets in work and probably always will because theyre easy to install, easy for thickos to understand, fast to start printing and you can get the cartridges refilled with little risk (printheads are on the cartridges, so you only **** the cartridge up not the printer itself!)
HP Lasers, had a lot of niggly issues with them lately, such as having to spend £250 to have a 'formatter board' replaced in one, not too happy bout that! (hP 1100D is a Laser printer, therefore the refills argument doesnt count!)
Canon - Their old printers before the i series came out, like the bubblejets were absolutely chronically shite. However after reading some reviews, seeing such printers as the i865, i965 and i990 climbing to the top of most decent review sites, i bought me a i9950 (A3+ & CDR printer) and i must say the quality is stunning. I found myself replacing the colour cart in the HP quite regularly yet it felt quite heavy, mainly because 2 of the 3 colours were still pretty stocked. The canons multiple ink tank thing means i only replace the colour i need to replace and not them all! Epson does this too, but i think the Canon beats it for quality, ive saw my brothers A3+ printouts, mine farts in its general direction, i win, end of argument!
Baz, Canon printers are utter shite, maybe your stuck in the dark ages dude, the IT industry moves at a pace maybe a bit too swift for you lad, put yer feet up, open a kronie and let an expert talk ;)

check that review out, that site is about the most respected hardware reviews site on the net, it has the Canon i865 as the best all-round Deskjet out there...

I run two Epson Stylus CX3200 printers, one at work and one at home - all-in-one with a flatbed scanner built-in. The one at work can get through several hundred sheets a day when I'm busy, several hundred sheets a week if I'm not, and I've found the quality and speed to be excellent.
I've also managed to find myself a supplier that will sell recon cartridges at £5 a time, for either black or colour.

Im with HP and agree with Stret on what he has said about the cartridges. Just bought a new photosmart 7960 and the quality on that is really good.

Managed to get a HP Laserjet 1100 from work last year that was bust. Fixed it with a repair kit over the net from the US for 20 quid
