You had a child 2 1/2 yrs old, and another one due any day now. You are skint due to a cock up with your pay from work, and you will not have any money until a week Friday.
Then, you are walking along the street, and find a wallet with £150 in it. Do you keep the money or hand it it?

I'd keep the money then hand it in but without giving my name or anything so the police didn't know who I was.
Of course you keep it!
Is this entirely hypothetical?!

Im going to be the sad person here and say hand the money and the wallet in

I would keep it in any situation, as long as you cut up any credit cards and that you are doing the person who lost it a favour. Stopping it falling into unscrupulous hands.

Keep the dosh....send the wallet to it's owner by post with an anon note stating where you found it

Ive found 2 such wallets with a money in them to the value of about £600.
I handed them in both times :D

Well done Proud Owl - very admirable and I'm sure the 2 people were very pleased when they got them back. Did you find out if they did?

Put yersel in the shoes of the poor sod who lost it in the first place. The Mrs lost her purse last year when we went over to Jockoland and it was handed in with all money in it so there are decent folk out there somewhere.

There is no such thing as decent people. Only a fool turns down easy money like that.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with being foolish. If there is a way of tracing the owner somehow I'd like to think a fair share of individuals would do the honest thing.

I'd hand it in,I find wallets/phones/purses all the time and I have done it and I'll do it again - no questions.

As im totally skint at the moment and with xmas coming up I would keep the money. If I was a bit flush I would probably give it all back.
I actually lost my wallet in the back of a cab not to long back and had it handed back to me minus 30 quid. They had been through all my cards too!!!

25th November 2004, 17:40
I'd keep it even if i wasn't skint.

Bit late for that though?
If there was a contact name in the wallet I'd return it, intact, if not I'd keep it. I certainly wouldn't hand it in to the Police, they'd keep it for a few months then donate it to their benevolent fund . . . :angryfire

Best thing I ever did was have children. My son is coming to his first Swansea match after the New Year.

It's stealing, plain and simple.
Did you ever think that maybe the owner is even harder up for cash than you are? Terminally ill child or something....
 hand it in

Snap the cards up though and drop the wallet down a drain.

I found a rather expensive mobile phone on a train to Maidenhead about 3 months ago. I took it, rang the 'HOME' number, bloke drove round next day and picked it up. My housemates thought I was nuts...they're probably right.

Drop it in a puddle and claim it by internationally recognised maritime salvage laws:D .
Seriously though I once lost a wallet with 150 quid in it when I was 13 and saved up all my paper round cash for weeks to go on holiday. We were flying from Manchester and I left my wallet in the Edinburgh waverly train station.
When I got off the train in Manchester I got paged over the tannoy to come to the lost and found and they gave me all my cash back even though my actual wallet was hundereds of miles away cos some really nice person found a bright yellow wallet with £150 and a school bus pass in it and decided to hand it in.

Was listening to Five Live a couple of nights back and the story was a couple of American lads who found a handbag and just handed it straight in to Police without really looking. It contained $46,000 - all the woman's Earthly possesions (something to do with buying a house). They got $100 apiece reward...
I've only left my phone in a taxi and rang it straight away and got it back from the taxi firm the next day. I can't understand people who walk round with hundred plus quid in their skyrocket anyway, there's enough cash machines all over the place not to take the risk.

Keep the money hand the wallet in.
If I lost my purse I wouldn't expect to get it back with the money still inside it.

I think most people would do that, but just don't want to admit it.
