I don't know what it is but that show seems to have inspired a few people I've been told over the last few days that my family origins on one side have come from Norway across to Huddersfield and eventuially onto Oldham where my Dad was born, and all my mums lost relatives are in fact all Man City fans :(, there used to be Coal mines underneath Manchester, and 365 Cotton Mills in Oldham where ancestors worked

what about other people? does anyone know where they come from?

I think I've moved about a mile down the road from the town called Atherton. ;)

It's a fairly common name round here, there used to be a rich family called Atherton I believe and we're descended from them probably.

Well all my family orginate from Scotland. My fathers side is the one I know most about - we first of all came from the village Thornhill near Stirling but then we married someone from a wrong clan and were thrown out so seeked refuge from another branch of the family down at Thornhill in Dumfries. However, that also ended badly as my great great grandparents were hung for sheep stealing.

The English all have foreign blood from somewhere along the line with all the people who have invaded, The Romans, The Celts, The Vikings, The Normans etc

When driving south from Scotland I always see the sign for Thornhill from the M74, I will now always think of you and hanging due to sheep stealing.

my recent family history is Welsh on both sides, my maiden name is french comes from ancestors on my mothers side dating back to the 12th century, from Picardy,SW France.
Its ironic that my married name (now divorced) is also french, ex's family originated from Brittany in France & apparently the name is still highly regarded over there today as they were aristocracy! (dunno how far back)
But I was always reminded by the out-laws that i HAD to put the hyphen in when writting the surname.

A pikey ;)

As for you Englanders, basically you're all Roman offspring or Saxon.

nah the Romans didn't settle in Britain in meaningful numbers, those that did mixed with Celts who were then pushed back into Cornwall, Wales and Brittany,France by the invading Anglo-Saxons.

Apparently the surnames of my grandparents are half Anglo-Saxon and half Norman.
