View Full Version : Those Five Guys That Live at the Top of this Site

Every time I come to this site the five faces positioned at the top left hand corner of every page greet me. Now I’m sure they wouldn’t be there if they weren’t immensely famous players, the trouble is I have no idea who they are. Other than watching the standings I don’t follow international soccer, and to be honest I can’t at the moment name two non-American players in the Premiership. Heck after giving up my season tickets this year I only casually follow the American leagues.

I was wondering if someone could, from left to right, tell me their names, teams they play for, and what makes the relevant.

Why do I want to know? I visit this site and see them almost every day, they’ve become almost like old friends. It seems almost disrespectful not to know their names or anything about them. That and I’m just curios. ;)

I'd think you were joking if you weren't a Yank. :)

And you're missing out if you only watch US football and not other leagues where the standard is much higher.

Anyway, from left to right:
Alan Shearer, goal scoring legend, plays for Newcastle.
Jamie Carragher, Champions League winner with Liverpool, plays in defence.
Crapiano Ronaldo, Portuguese diving champion and fan favourite at Man Utd.
Frank Lampard, midfielder for Chelsea.
Thierry Henry, one of the best players in the world to watch and scorer of some spectacular goals for Arsenal.

from left to right - Alan Shearer. An English striker who shot to prominence when he won the Premiership with Blackburn Rovers in the early 90s. Went on to play many games for England including a storming Euro 1996 tournament when England were unlucky to go out on penalties in the semi final. Now plays for his home town club Newcastle United and has generally been scoring loads of goals for them. He's a bit old now and many think this will be his last season before retirement.

Next is Jamie Carragher. He's an English defender who is Liverpool through and through. He has played for them since he was a kid and still does today. He has also played for England a number of times. He won the European Champions League last season with Liverpool.

Then it is Cristiano Ronaldo. He's a Portuguese winger who plays for Man Utd with a bag of tricks and lots of flair. He is only in his early 20s and is already thought of as one of the most exciting players in the world. He also plays for Portugal.

Next it is Frank Lampard. Lampard is an English centre midfielder who plays for Chelsea who are currently dominating the English Premiership. He used to play for West Ham but really came into his own in the last 3 seasons where he has become one of the worlds best central midfielders. He is a fantastic passer who scores regularly with fantastic long range strikes. He is a regular for England.

Finally on the far right is Thierry Henry. He is a French forward who plays for Arsenal. He is widely thought of as one of the worlds best players, and has broken just about every goalscoring record there is for Arsenal. One of the fastest players with the ball in the world, he sometimes goes missing against the big teams and for France, but can annihilate lesser teams on his day.

We deliberated for yonks over which players to put up there.

The three on the right finished in the top three of the Premier League, Carragher won a Champions League medal and since we were unsure who Gerrard would be playing for this season was the scousers choice to represent lxxxrpxxl, and Shearer is the all time top scorer in the Premier League.

We had a banner with Ferguson of Rangers and Hartson of Celtic on it too, but it was too 'busy' . . .

Stret seeing as Hearts are top of the scottish league, and with Romanov supplying the cash. hopefully staying there for a while, could we get Rudi Skacel or another fine Hearts player on the banner, that way you have a small representation for scotland, it only takes up 1 more place so doesnt appear too "busy" AND no arguments between celtic and rangers fans as to why their team should be up their instead of the other Glasgow team!!

Please :D ;)

Right click on your Desktop, select 'Settings', and change your screen resolution to 800x600, then take another look at the banner. There's no room on it for another player?

Some of our members are still using 800x600.

He did say that he didn't tend to follow International football/soccer.
I don't know many american soccer legends, like he does. Does that make me not a fan ?

I just wondered if you had any evidence that anyone anywhere in the world still uses 800x600? Kids in tin huts in Burma would even laugh at you.

I know for a fact that one member of staff is still using 800x600, I don't know why, but then it isn't really anything to do with me, is it?

Thanks folks, I appreciate you not bashing me to hard for what must appear to be an extremely naive question.

It's a question of time. When I decided to go back and finish my Bachelors degree (while keeping a full time job) it meant things like soccer season tickets and all free time in general had to be sacrificed.

You tell me!! I don't know ;)

To me a legend is someone who has accomplished great feats in a long career years ago. In baseball this would be names like Ruth, Robinson, Mays, Gehrig, and so forth. People who's exploits grow with every retelling.

Professional soccer at a high level in this country has only existed for ten or so years. I don't think we have anyone who qualifies as a legend as yet.

Especially since most of our best players still go over seas to play, which eliminates them from potential legend status in my eyes.

Just my opinion.
