Danny Guthrie

From nufc.com

Oh Danny boy, the
Mags are calling.....

Reports from Merseyside on Friday suggest that the story we brought you below on June 15th may be about to come to fruition, with a fee agreed for the player and talks over personal terms believed to be ongoing:

Bolton officials have made it known that they expect to be unsuccessful in their attempts to sign midfielder Danny Guthrie - as the player is coming to SJP.

The 21 year-old spent last season on loan at the Reebok from Liverpool, having spent part of 2006/07 being borrowed by Southampton.

Released by Manchester United as a 15 year-old, Guthrie made three sub appearances for Liverpool - the last of which was at SJP in February 2007.

Guthrie has made 54 senior career appearances - his only goal to date coming in a League Cup victory at Craven Cottage, marking his Bolton debut.

Just been confirmed on SSN also.

Thoughts ?

Seems like another good squad addition to me. Don't yet if he is capable of being a regular first teamer.

Disagree, looked a very tidy player to me. Keeps the ball moving and thats exactly what Newcastle need. He's still young too, got plenty of years to improve.

Lets be frank, he's a better option to have than Smith in central midfield!

Shrewd bit of business by Keegan imo, especially at £2m

All 21 year-olds have time to improve their game. Only silly people think otherwise.

Seems like the lad has a decent pedigree.

Happy to have him on board. Who knows, maybe the likes of Wise, Llambias, Jimenez and Vetere do have a plan after all.

I reckon our reserves could be good to watch this year.

He's nowhere near as good as Barton but he'll do ok as cover from the bench probably. Never involved in any goals sadly, though its probably difficult in a struggling team with no finisher once Anelka had left.

Nobody said he won't improve his game. He probably will, but I doubt he'll ever be a player good enough to hold a regular first team spot. I'd have taken him for half that price at the most.

Worth a go. He might become a solid squad player.

I remember him scoring a cracking right foot shot on his debut for Bolton against Fulham.
Or maybe scoring doesnt mean being involved in goals these days?

Carling Cup that though, and that's a massive 1 you've got.

1896 Premier League minutes without a goal or assist. Now statistics don't tell it all but you'd expect something in an entire season.

Remember that after seeing Guthrie close up for an entire season, analysing his performances and potential, we'd rather spend £5.5m on Fabrice Muamba than bother putting a £2m bid in for Guthrie.

Wonder if he'll play at the weekend. But he's our player, and if he works hard, he should do well.
