btw: The final between us and the Czechs was the (first and) last penalty shootout that Germany lost at Euro or World Cup.
Devastating moment not only for Uli Hoeneß but also for a 13 year old boy in front of the TV (me ;) )

Back then all boys in Germany "hated" the Czech Panenka for this penalty against our legend Sepp Maier (his 3rd final in a row, Euro 72, World Cup 74, Euro 76)

and we could "strangle" Uli Hoeneß for this one ;)

With only 8 teams, many teams would miss out in both the Champions League and the World Cup.

Yes but unless you scrap the qualifiers and have every player/club/country in the finals then something will always miss out on the tournament.

True, but only Chile and Italy missed out deservedly last World Cup. Which teams would qualify if there were only eight spots?

tournaments with 8 teams would be far more competitive/harder to win than tournaments with more than 8 teams in them.

in Rugby Union the then tri nations competition between New Zealand, South Africa and Australia playing on a home and away basis was harder to win than the Rugby Union world cup was.

the expansion of a tournament waters down the quality of the event to a considerable and unacceptable degree.

    It would be too short.

It clearly would not work. especially in the World Cup, which is a celebration for football. Also, the qualifying would be pointless for countries like Greece, which are capable of qualifying and qualifying is already a challenge. Qualifying would be a tournament of its own, while qualifying isn't supposed to be that glamorous.

Also, Africa, Asia and North America would not be represented at all.
