.....is now a realistic possibility. However do we want it?

A top 10 finish will still do me but a place in Europe in our first ever season in the top flight would be fantastic. I am a believer that you have to take these opportunities when they arise and we may not get this opportunity presenting itself for another few seasons.

The fortunes of Reading this year remind me a bit of the short success story Ipswich enjoyed when they came up a few years ago.

They managed to secure a UEFA cup spot on their first year back in the bigtime, but got distracted too much by it in their second season and ended up paying the ultimate penalty.

While it's refreshing to see Reading playing well and doing well in their first season in the Premiership, I still think it's a time to be wary of what may lie ahead...

Not taking anything away from the club though, Steve Coppell has done an ace job! Just thinking of the future

Fair points and it looks like we won't be reaching Europe now. I get the impression the club don't really want it anyway due to the extra costs it will involve in terms of having a bigger squad, etc..... It isn't as if the UEFA Cup brings in a lot of money.

Second season survival or a few matches in the UEFA Cup - it's a no-brainer really, even though it would still be fantastic to see Reading in Europe.

Yes it is quite realistic but you will have tto win every last game to get there and then improve your squad for next season !

You deserve to edge out the massively over-achieveing Tottenham Hotspur for that 7th spot and you might yet just about do it......

If you get into the UEFA it may have a bad effect on next season, possibly reminiscent of Ipswich a few years back.

Possibly the best thing to do is to stay out this year, build your squad for next season to have more depth, then make a push for a European spot next year.

I'm sure you'll get widespread agreement from Reading fans with that:slap:

What he says does have a lot sense about it, and Coppell has more or less said the same. We would probably need to bring in 3 or 4 more players above what we are already looking to bring in, and to be honest I don't think it will have a positive affect on the squad. The UEFA Cup is not worth any money to the club and would in affect only cost us money.

If it happens, it happens, but I won't be disspointed if it doesn't.

On the other hand, it might be a lot easier to attract those 3 or 4 players if you can promise them european matches.

But that is the whole point - Coppell doesn't want to have to bring in those extra 3 or 4 players. He wants a squad of 21 or 22 players which is enough for a Premiership season, but won't be enough if we get into Europe.

You guys will probably need to replace Sidwell though. It might be easier if you could tempt good quality players with UEFA competition.

Well after those couple of replies I can see that I don't have any connection with the ambition of some Reading fans. No problem we're all different.

It's a genuine possiblity that using a European carrott to attract players may get you some workshy over-rated duds which we specialise in. But Europe ususally brings in revenue to a club. Might have to gamble a bit if you want to play though.

If we qualify for Europe, I don't think we will need to replace Sidwell :thumb
