From April this year the government will abandon all the concessions for new cars that meet low emission targets. Only zero emission (electric) vehicles will pay no tax, everyone else, including hybrid drivers will pay substantially more.

These changes apply to new vehicles bought on or after 1/4/17.

As an example my own car, which is currently £30 a year road tax would be £140 a year, an increase of 460%.

    The joys of motoring . . .

This will harm the new car market imo. Why buy a brand new car which will cost 2k in tax for the first year when you can get the same car a year old and not pay anywhere near that.

It's just a complete joke, and it's going to **** the market up, it'll get reversed quickly I think.

    It's all a rip off.

And most of the money won't go on what the road tax is there for either.

Can't see the benefit to them, they're throwing away £300+ a year on all the Range Rovers and the likes out there for a supplement on only the new ones bought.

My next car won't be an eco I know that for sure.

Mine's only £20 a year to tax, if they're all gonna be the same to tax, there's no incentive to buy a car like this anymore.

Might as well go an extra litre, less fuel efficient sure but that's to be expected.

Any car costing over £40k incurs an additional £310 pa charge for the first 5 years, in addition to its standard road tax so you'd have to get one of the cheaper variants but it's definitely possible.

Any car I own will probably be under £40k face value and over 5 years old so I should be fine

It applies to cars bought new after today that cost over £40,000, including extras and options.
