@Old codger I’m always reading stuff and take an interest in things from the past. What was your reaction and the general reaction of the fans when Brian Clough took over at Leeds. Not sure if there are any other Leeds fans on here from that era.

It was a strange appointment to say the least, he never got on with Don ( Revie ) & the players, Revie himself & the fans wanted John Giles to take over giving some continuity but the board had already decided Clough was the man for the job. From day one he seemed hell bent on upsetting the players by calling them cheats, something was leaked out to the fans. He was arrogant enough to lead the team out for the 1974 Charity Shield, something everyone felt should have been Dons last action at the club. This was the game that saw Keegan & Bremner kicking off, Clough never defended Bremner in fact he lambasted him, something that didn’t go down well with the fans, after all Billy was citied as Leeds greatest ever player, which he was by the way.
The first home game saw lots of fans in the west stand shouting for Clough to be sacked, a very angry mob. The writing was on the wall by this time regarding his future at the club. It was clear the players weren’t giving 100%. He brought in McGovern & O’Hare again upsetting the fans, if memory serves me correctly they left soon after Clough. McKenzie was also brought in, a player with tremendous flair & ability who in time won over the fans, I’m certain the board regretted the decision to bring him to the club & rest after 44 days is history. Forest fans must be pleased this happened because of what he achieved at the City Ground there’s no denying he did a wonderful job there. Sadly he was never going achieve at Leeds what he did at Forest, sadly.

No, but he also was very close to taking the Villa job too.

Yeah I watched the interview again the other day. I got the impression that Clough was slightly jealous of Revie. I think it was an impossible job for Clough. Revie made some very valid points in that famous interview show, and it made Clough look a bit silly. Two great managers mind.

Clough wanted to outdo Revie (which he did in the end) and Revie didn't want someone else to better him. Funny how the paths of these 2 went after Revie tried to embarrass Clough on TV.....one becoming a legend and European champion (twice) and the other a failure as England manager and skulking off for a windfall in the middle East

Well he certainly out done Revie with those two European cups. Clough was far too outspoken for the England job. How many titles did Clough win with Derby? Was it just the one? I know they won two during the 70s. That Forest side was very good under Clough during the late 70s .

Yeah the FA would never have had someone like Clough. They prefer yes men and that's still the same to this day

He won one first division title with Derby having got them out of the depths of the second division. He would have won more but (if my facts are right) he fell out with the board the following season (I think it was after the European Cup defeat against Juve) and the end was nigh.

Yeah some people forget that Derby were in the semi final of the European cup. Didn’t he do the same with Forest? Bring them up from the second division to win it all. Those were the days when that was a regular occurrence with teams coming up and challenging for the title.

You're testing my knowledge now Rock. I'm pretty sure that we were already in the top division when Cloughie came in. Not sure we looked like European champions when he did though

It didn’t take long for Forest to start winning stuff. I think you came up around 75 and around 77 won league cup and then went on to win the league and then back to back European cups. You can also throw in another league cup and the super cup.
