Brooks did switch to England. Was a star man for the u20 side in tournament football, but didn't get moved up promptly to the u21s, and went back to Wales.

It's not quite so straightforward, is it? Plenty of players Anglo-Irish, Anglo-Jamaican and so on. Just because they may have spent their childhood in England, shouldn't mean that they change have multiple options and can only play for England - to hell with them if they aren't deemed good enough. It should be their choice.

But I don't agree with 'naturalised' players (see Qatar and even France) as that is open to abuse, and once you have played any senior game that should be decision made.

In a case like you are referring to there, you should be eligible to play for whichever you choose but the choice should be made based upon who the person wants to represent from the outset. It shouldn't be a case of waiting to see if you are good enough to play for one nation and if not using the other as some sort of backup plan to play international football.

This thread was quite funny when he made his decision.

The point is, early on playing for England wasn't an option. Rice was trying to make his way in the game (as you may know the failure rate is very high) and Ireland was a pathway to achieving some success. He will probably have been advised by his parents/family to take Ireland up on their offer.

FIFA should lower the "lockdown" requirement to U21 caps tbh, everyone else has to make serious life choices before that age, and it stops a country's U21 team get used as an academy for the bigger next door neighbour.

Declan Rice has won Irish young player of the year.

What a great opportunity to piss people off this is. Get him to pose with the award in his England shirt pls

Like when Nathan Jones collected a MOTM award gained at Luton when wearing Stoke's training kit!

Should be in over Trippier if we are going off form.

    Arguably Walker as well.

Surprised at Southgate TBH. If any young English player deserves a call-up this season it's AWB.

Apparently Ward-Prowse doesn't get the call up because he's only got into the Southampton team (ok then, has played like the last 14)

But then, Delph has played 10 minutes of PL football since January, Loftus-Cheek has not started since like November for Chelsea and barely has 90 minutes in total in the PL since the turn of the year.

Hmmmn, thought this big club bias was over but apparently not.

I wonder if he will turn up in person to collect the award on Sunday. The speech would be great...
Thank you very much. This is a great honour!:winner

Hudson-Odoi and Ward-Prowse in now. Still no Wan-Bissaka.

    Something about double-barrelled names?

Do as I do (at least when it has been establish who we are talking about) and use one name. Hudson, Prowse, Cheek etc A lot of them have half a dozen unpronounceable names.

Both Brooks and Ampadu have Welsh mothers so gives them every right to play for Wales if they chose too.
