Was the same number, and not now Solanke's in! :)

Aye, but just because he's calling up U21s to give them experience in the squad. Solanke is behind Sturridge for us who isn't there!

Omen for the three he's selected to promote though I guess, Solanke & Angus Gunn as well, who I've heard is considered a proper prospect.

That doesn't make any sense at all! How can a man of the match performance against Germany be a bad thing and show we're struggling? If he plays well against Brazil and we don't lose, will two good results playing young players against top teams show that we're struggling too?

I should've been more clear. I don't mean we're struggling performance wise. Southgate's doing alright to be fair.

I mean we're struggling in terms of an overall talent pool to choose from. Expectations have dropped so low that a decent (if unspectacular) debut from a young player who has 0 Premier League starts for his parent club to his name has been lauded all over the media. The likes of Dominic Solanke and Lewis Cook have now been called up despite neither starting regularly for their clubs. It just shows how limited opportunities are for young English players in the PL and how poor the overall level of the 'older' English talent is.

FWIW I like what Southgate's trying and I hope it gives the PL managers a kick up the arse they need to give these youngsters more opportunities. I'm not holding my breath though.

Strong lineup for Brasil. Experimental for England.

Not gonna be negative and start moaning before kick off, but honestly that is the worst England team I think I have ever seen in my lifetime. That bench :eeek

He’s been excellent has Joe (watch him **** up now lol) but this be 1 1/2 games against the top two sides in the world, needs to get in as a centre back for us...trouble is he or Matip would have to play left sided...both are very much right sided centre backs.

Gomez and Maguire the stand out players for me. Looked solid and not afraid to play out from the back.

Glad I didn't watch this as it would have been the 5th 0-0 draw i've watched in a row with these bloody internationals (I watched bits of them anyway).

Enjoyed Denmark's performance at least tonight.A bit of quality at last.

Quietly optimistic, Southgate showing some balls and seems to have an actual plan

Stones too, all three were the best players on the pitch for us by a long way.

I've always liked a back three with wing backs.

Yeah with Stones, Cahill, Maguire, Gomez, Jones and Smalling we actually now have some decent options at centreback.

It's in midfield where we are still struggling though. We lack creativity and need Lallana back as soon as possible imo.

Not a brilliant game to watch but an excellent defensive performance against a really strong side. The three cbs stole the show for me, I can't remember England ever have three cbs that all looked comfortable on the ball.
With the benefit of hindsight I would've liked to see Solanke start up front with either Vardy or Rashford we would've probably created more chances.
The only criticism really is Livermore, what does he bring to the team ?, am I missing something.

He just seems to be on the pitch to kick the shite out of the opposition.

Without a doubt. Lallana, Kane and Alli should be the first names on the team sheet.

Fair enough we didn’t win, they were friendlies etc., but I think Southgate has done ok. Bringing in some youngsters and getting them to play different formations is something that has been beyond some of his predecessors.

For me there’s still a space going in midfield for a more solid-type player. Don’t really fancy Livermore or Henderson but who else is there?

He's very much a system player for Southgate, individually I completely agree he's really nothing special but he fits what Southgate wants well... He seems to be trying to build a team with a solid defensive identity, not expansive but I can actually see what he's trying to do. Boring but this style has proven effective at international level over recent years.

The line-ups & formation may have changed over his tenure but there's actually more of a consistency in style than with other managers I feel, & a better balance for that style. Still not sure it'll actually work.
