The best should take the 1st 2nd or 3rd seen as there might not be any 5th to take. Kane was showing the way

Ya exactly. It also didn't stop Ronaldo doing the same thing for real a few years later. He just wanted the glory of scoring the winning penalty over what's best for the team.

I'd say foden and grealish hope a new manager comes in

I don't see that happening, our F.A have never been particularly axe happy. Even Keegan kept his job after Euro 2000

Yeah I have no problem with Kane/Best pen taker taking the first....miss the first and youre under immediate pressure, score the first you put the oppositions first taken under pressure.

Thankfully, we'd get nowhere if we were a sack happy nation like Holland

I don't see how Kane can be criticised for taking the first penalty. The best penalty taker has to take one of the first three and be a guaranteed penalty taker, and a lot of the best will want to (rightly) set the tone and lead the way.

“Has to…” seems like a lot of teams in history disagree with your essential rule.

If you want to win the shoot out, you want your best penalty takers to take one. Putting them in the first three is the only way to guarantee that.

If you don't win a shoot out because your best penalty taker wanted to be a hero and never ended up taking one, like Ronaldo's done twice, then you're foolish. It doesn't make any sense. It makes about as much sense as saying Kane went hiding, because he took the first penalty.

I'm all up for criticizing England all day, where it's possible, but there's got to be some sort of logic to it.

You should share this information with someone. You wouldn’t believe how many professional football clubs disagree with the logic and prefer to save the best taker for the most pressured penalty.

Worked out well for us anyway!

Doesn't Messi usually take the first penalty too?

Also I seem to remember Ronaldo being selected as the 5th penalty taker (maybe against Spain in 2012) and it never got to him.

He’s also missed 29 penalties in his career. Best player. Yes. Best penalty taker. Probably not.

Well Southgate's chosen him first, he's taken it, scored and set the tone. All the penalty's are as pressured as each other in a game like that. That's all he can do. I don't know how you can paint this on one of the penalty scorers and in any way paint that he was hiding for successfully going first.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the logic that you want your best penalty taker to be guaranteed to take one, and the vast majority of sides have their best penalty takers taking first. I know there's a few egos who loved to go last as they want to be a match winner, but the best decision for the team is what England did. If you disagree with the logic, then feel free to explain why but don't act out as if I'm saying anything revolutionary or something that everyone else on here won't already know.

Of course it counts. A good penalty taker scores more often than not.

absolutely, get your specialist penalty takers first. Otherwise they may not get to take one.

Twitter can obviously make it seem like a much bigger problem, but toxic bigotry is there for all to see and hear in the real world too. Take booing opposition anthems, for instance - it can't be argued it's a minority when the boos are clearly audible on TV and have to be drowned out by turning the volume up. Other examples include defacing the Rashford & George Floyd (x2) murals with racist shite scrawled across. It's all part of the same mentality that revolves around shitting on someone else.

The 12-year-old had no excuse when he'll have gone through the entire school system being taught the values of diversity and tolerance every day. We've all said stupid things as little kids, but let's not pretend this was that and he didn't understand the words he was saying, it was willful hatred aimed at getting a rise.

I posted these 3 posts separately so how did they get bunched together? I noticed this before but just thought I might have somehow done it myself.

It’s been a couple of days now and with reflection, I’m beginning to feel a little peeved with Southgate.

It was clear as day that Italy were really pushing for an equaliser and I think we all saw it coming, yet Southgate did nothing about it. Why couldn’t he put Rashford on to make Italy worry about getting countered with pace?

Sterling was knackered, Kane is slow, we offered no threat. We just sat back and let Italy play. It’s not good enough.

    Pathetic.

I agree, there's no point leaving your 'bankers' to the end, if the others have missed then they'll never get to take their kicks.

Because don't question sitting 7 of your outfield 10 players as defensive minded players. It's the work of a genius and can't be questioned. It's the mentality of a top side apparently (don't ask why the top sides play entirely differently to greater success)

Ignore the fact he's made the same mistake twice in a row now as well, that's just unfortunate, nothing to do with the guy whose crowning achievement is beating a very past it Germany side after reluctantly subbing on Grealish late in the game

Said it about 20 minutes in to the game, Italy were clearly getting too comfortable, Southgate's nonsense set up was failing to get any control despite how ridiculously cautious it was, it needed to change, it didn't. Opportunity wasted as far as I am concerned. Would rather not let him do the same a third time so we can see the peak years of Kane wasted in a fruitless system.
