What always struck me about this is why the baker didn't just say sorry we are too busy at the moment and won't be able to meet your deadline. The gay couple obviously knew he had this view and went in to manufacture a court case which thankfully they lost.

Obviously? Nothing about the details of this case suggest this.

They just happened to wander into a baker, get told no and why and then start a law suit and milk the media attention? if they'd have gone to Gregs they would have done it, or any number of local bakers who advertise on social media and are usually much cheaper but no I like the one in town, lets go there darling. Pfffft!!

The owners of the bakery said that they'd served this couple multiple times before, maybe they just really liked this bakery and wanted to support a local business? To then get that thrown back in their face would've been upsetting and given that one of the couple is a gay rights campaigner I can completely see why what has happened has happened.

Could I just remind you that the order was actually accepted by the store (they didn't walk in and get told no), so it clearly wasn't a company policy to refuse to do custom orders with support of homosexuality on them. Nor is the bakery openly religious in any way. Their website has no mention of them being religious.

Slight hint of homophobia in your post...

Slight - small in degree; inconsiderable.
Hint - suggest or indicate something indirectly or covertly.

Nothing like a huge overreaction pal.

Yes it was not a public policy of theirs, and the whole thing was poorly handled.

However, if you lived in Northern Ireland you knew Ashers was owned by religious people long before this court case.

People need to stop criticizing the choice of Bakery, just like the Colorado one, they've been there before on numerous occasions, they clearly thought they had good relations with the folks there. It's a reasonable choice to make the request there (and sometimes, people your on good terms with actually do things they disagree with for your sake).

Whether their disappointment justifies the court case (I'll dissent from the general consensus and say people can't use religion as a excuse to make homophobic decisions then hide behind it when it's convenient, although I don't think they should lose their business or anything like that) let's just not pretend we have some superior knowledge to question their motives.

Positive and negative rights frequently conflict. This in itself creates an inherent conflict. When this occurs, the law steps in and makes sure all individual rights are protected and that no one leverages power on your individual rights.

Reason why both in Belfast and in the states, verdict was for the baker.

I think the one thing we can all agree from this is that it shows how backwards the religious folk in Ireland are.

I generally consider religion (note - not faith) a barrier to progress, wherever it happens to be.

People are so quick to be judgemental, from both sides of this debate.
