Enjoyed his commentary, mainly for his enthusiasm for the game. Will be missed.

His speech on the pitch about Graham Taylor before our memorial game in pre-season was superb.

As commentators go he was one of the best. As Steve said, it was his enthusiasm that made him really good.

    Wish him luck in retirement.

Loved the little snippets of info he would trot out during a game.

He was the best brilliant and unlike a few today dont try and make it about them

Motson along with Ian Darke and Jon Champion were the best by far

I thought he was shit to be honest, but the newer BBC commentators are even worse.

Real shame - but he was getting on. Another piece of childhood gone, although at least he isn't a paedo like Stuart Hall - or dead like Rik Mayall or Brian Cant

Best bit of commentary will always be the France - Portugal semi in 84. Loses it.

One of the greatest matches ever.

My favourite was when he did the 1982 World Cup game between Brazil and Italy..........Italy won 3-2 and i still have nightmares about that great team going out.

Am I in the minority that thinks it was about time? He's been too cliched for years.

Mark Lawrenson, now that **** needs to **** off sharpish too.

I did think he was doing less and less live coverage - more on radio and MOTD which maybe showed he was reducing in work load/importance.

Yeah I was gutted too, remember that Socrates goal, sublime! that's the beauty of football championships, you can stumble on great matches - watched Nigeria 3 Spain 2 in a pub on a lazy Saturday lunchtime in 1998. Brilliant match.

Socrates..............one of the coolest names ever for a footballer. The belter he scored v U.S.S.R. was my favourite.

I quite liked the Brazil - Scotland match. Perfect sniggering at the jocks and amazing goals.

Alan Rough just looking shell shocked when Eder's chip goes over his head :D

Still remember the commentary ........... " little chip........oh i say what a brilliant goal "

It is great reminiscing about that World Cup. Was the first one i watched and can remember it so well. How dare the Scots took the lead with a thunderbolt from Narey. Think that made Brazil very angry.

Best goal that sticks out is Eder's flick up and volley v the Soviet Union.

Yeah 1982 was a brilliant WC- seemed like every Brazil goal was a cracker. Suppose I remember 1978 first (I was 6 at the time), just the tickertape and that theme tune they used for the Robinsons squash adverts!

Worst thing about it is when you are at work and miss an afternoon cracker. There was a 5-4 a few championships ago. Everyone kept going on about it!!

Brilliant commentator. My faves are Alan Green Mike Ingham, Ian Dennis, John Murray Motty and Martin Tyler also Mick Lowes from BBC radio Newcastle was class to. He was great at describing the action plus I used to love it when he used to get proper excited. It was chalk and cheese with him and Barrie Davies who used to be to dour.
