Let’s pay tribute, in these f*cking tedious times, to pay tribute to those transfers (or Loans) that you were surprised and uninspired by, that happened to do very well for you.

    For instance, I give you:

    "I said to me Mum,
    The other day,
I think I've seen, the new Pele.
She said to me, who is he?
I said his name, is Sam Sodje"

To be fair, he joined us from Margate when we were a proper 3rd tier forever team. Weren't you Premier League or just relegated around then?

Different expectations and indeed requirements I guess.

Pretty sure we were in League One.

Oh no, he was on loan during our first year back in The Championship too.

Never thought I’d see Dale Stephens play 70+ Premier League games for us when we signed him for 300k from Charlton.

However, the best example we have of this is

When you sign a 31 year old free agent who has never played in English football before you don’t really expect to get 7 seasons & 200+ games out of him. Captained us to the Premier League, has done a frankly staggering amount of work in the community & is apparently the nicest person you’ll ever meet. El Capitan, Bruno

Gareth McAuley, signed for free from Ipswich whilst we were in the Premier League - he was 32 at the time and hadn't played at that level before, most thought he'd be a sub at best when he signed.

He played over 200 Premier League games and got player of the season in 2012 - overall he was easily one of our best players of the past 10 years.

Tommy Rowe - Average L1 player but slotted right in.
Benik Afobe - Thought he was a rubbish panic buy.
Aden Flint - Was rubbish first few games.
Josh Brownhill - Didn't think he'd be rubbish, but he became a lot better than I expected him to be.

Mark Stein - came from Oxford after being dumped from the 1st team and in the reserves. Lou Macari turned him into a goal scoring machine. Ended up scoring 50 in 94 appearances for us before we sold him to Chelsea for a then club record of 1.5M (this was back in 1991-1994)

Got to say when we got him on a free off Man City I thought it seemed a little pointless. How wrong I was. What an integral player he’s been, versatile and reliable. A very funny guy and important player in the dressing room too. One of my faves.

Steve Foster. Leadership and steel. Not the silkiest but completed the team and led it through our most productive time. Was totally underwhelmed when we signed him but alongside one of our greatest ever in Mal Donaghy they were superb.

Christophe DuGarry. Not really that surprising as he was a class player before he joined us but he was magnificence personified, he owned every football pitch he walked on while he was with us..
