    To be honest, whatever you think of Sol Campbell and his constant claims of racism whenever something doesn't go his way, I think this is a decent idea from Macclesfield. They look pretty much doomed already and an ordinary lower/non league plodder would surely just follow this season to it's inevitable conclusion.

    Taking a gamble on a big name might just bring the extra bit of spark and publicity needed to turn things around and maybe attract some better players towards the ends of their careers who wouldn't ordinarily have given Macclesfield a look in. They did a similar thing with Paul Ince (another who constantly cries racism) around a decade ago when they were in a similarly impossible position and he turned them around and kept them up, which led to his big move to Blackburn.

    Bit of a no risk move here really. He'll attract some publicity and maybe temporarily increase the gates for a bit and there's that small chance that something could spark for them. And if it all goes wrong and he has a meltdown and implodes their results couldn't really get much worse and they'll just sail to their inevitable conclusion and get rid of him in the summer.

    As Sam says he cannot really lose as such - they keep losing and it will be well that was expected but Campbell will be a hero if Macclesfield stayed up like Paul Ince was.

    Sure Sol might claim he has had to start at the bottom because of his colour if it doesn't go well.

    I know Campbell isn't the most liked person out there but it shouldn't go unnoticed just how long it's taken for him to get a crack at management.

    Frank Lampard retires in February 2017 and has a job at Derby County within 15 months with no managerial experience.
    Sol Campbell retired in May 2012 and has only just got his first job, 6 and a half years later.
    Joey Barton walked straight into a job while still playing!!!
