VAR gave it yeah and thats why VAR is also shit. But its a rule independent of VAR and had the ref seen it he would have been expected to give it.
Both VAR and this rule need binning.

Last week I thought the new handball rule was a farce tbh.

This week I certainly see the benefit.....

    Nah. Its wank.

The new rules make it easier to identify a handball. That is arguably an advantage because it should at least ensure consistency.

On the other hand it feels completely unjust because a penalty is almost always a goal and you are awarding it against defenders who could not realistically have avoided it. They are completely fortuitous decisions.

I just suspect it's been come up with some pernickety fart in a suit who slaps himself on the back in drooling excitement because he's an "ideas man" that'll revolutionize the business but has barely even watched a game of football in his life, nor does he have the remotest grasp of physics in that it's impossible to keep your arms by your side at all times in a game of football.

I could understand it if Carroll's header was on target and Dier blocked it accidentally (I wouldn't agree, not just because I am a Spurs fan, but I can see that it's a grey area) but this was a directionless header and I'm all the more furious because it wasn't even a free-kick to begin with. Their player gave the ball away and then sprinted straight into Hojberg.

I was and still, largely, am a supporter of VAR but yes, things like this are ruining the game. What if we finish one point of a Champions League place? Non Spurs fans may laugh but it could happen to anyone. It's an absolute joke.

A team could really cash in by aiming for hands in the penalty area this season.

It's no good saying "the problem is the rule and not VAR". The rule is enforced in this pedantic and heavy-handed manner precisely because of VAR. Half of these "handballs" weren't even noticed in real time let alone appealed for.

So it's an 'absolute joke' and is 'ruining the game' but you still support VAR?

Apparently the rule cannot be changed until March, as that is when the next discussion/voting etc will take place.

Hope every Premier League club has a reliable penalty scorer this season.

I do not support the new handball rule.

I support the referee being given extra help and an opportunity to review decisions he may have got wrong.

End up like hockey where people aim for the feet than try to score.

And they will have to give every handball to be consistent.

But yeah I’m with Richard, both the rule and VAR need binning.

VAR definitely is part of the problem, because it will scrutinise everything that happens, meaning everything is potentially under it's jurisdiction. It's now a permanent argument to what it should and shouldn't enforce, and it's hard not to make the decisions on a binary basis. As was said before it was introduced, the human element was being replaced by robotic rule. It's like a copper giving a speeding ticket for someone going 1mph over the limit, a robot would do that but a human wouldn't.
