We are in Tenerife now. Ordered lateral flow tests at our expense for day 2 after our return, but understand we will need to do a PCR

I think we're going to need some proper scaremongering about the vaccine's effectiveness against the Omicron strain before people go back to masks and hand sanitising.

Yes, I just heard on the news that anyone flying in from anywhere will have to do a PCR test within 2 days of landing.

*What's the weather like in the Canarys?

Sixty-one people who arrived in Amsterdam on two flights from South Africa have tested positive for Covid-19, Dutch officials say.

They have been placed in isolation at a hotel near Schiphol airport.

They were among some 600 passengers held for several hours after arrival while they were tested for the virus.

The Dutch authorities are carrying out further testing to see if there are any cases of Omicron, named on Friday as a variant of concern by the WHO.

The variant was first reported to the World Health Organization in South Africa on 24 November.

In the last few hours many countries around the world have restricted travel from the southern African region.

Meanwhile the Netherlands is one of several European countries struggling to contain record numbers of infections.

A partial lockdown will be extended on Sunday, with all hospitality and cultural venues forced to close between 17:00 and 05:00, at least until 19 December.

Seems cat is out of the bag with this new strain already. Guess we have no choice but to go all out with natural immunity and I am sure absolutely nothing bad will happen

Man who went to COVID party to build immunity dies from the virus

No doubt in my mind the UK has been quick to react as a means to clog up the news. It could prove to be a good move, it could prove to be jumping the gun.

I don't think the Government really cares.

So some people would rather deliberately catch a dangerous and potentially fatal virus, with the aim of gaining immunity from it in the future, rather than having a vaccine that comes with a miniscule risk and achieves the same thing? Darwinism in full force. Natural selection.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't?
They allowed flights from India for a month when Delta first appeared and got slaughtered for their inaction, perhaps they are trying to not repeat the same mistake for once.

Cases have been rising for about 2 weeks now (though showing another sign of dipping off maybe) and hospitalisations are still falling. It seems this booster programme is really taking effect.

Indeed, deaths down 17%, hospital admissions down 11%, as you said encouraging since the case numbers are up 6%. :hopefully
