When did the Champions League, or European Cup for that matter, ever have only eight teams?

originally the uefa champions league was just the group phase of the European cup and in 1991-92,1992-1993,1993-1994 seasons the group stage only had 8 teams in it split into two groups of 4.

    example 1992-93
    group A
    Marseille
    Rangers
    Brugge
    Cska Moscow

    Group B
    AC Milan
    Ifk Gothenburg
    Oporto
    PSV Eindhoven

there will be split Champions League kick-off times with some matches starting at 7pm and others at 9pm CET on Uefa champions league match days to be debuted in the uefa champions league in 2018/19 season.

The group stage is rigged in favour of the elite and so much time is committed to filtering out the weakest sides, whilst giving the strongest ones the safety net of six games to guarantee their progress. The allure of the competition is declining as a consequence.

The Champions League is quickly becoming the fast food of football. Poor quality and too much of it around. It should be about the best teams in Europe playing each other, which is exactly what you get from the quarter-finals onwards. The rest is just a money making.

Group stage is pointless, especially in the format you have highlighted where it only starts in the new year.
European Cup/Champions League was best with an unseeded knockout cup

    It's a terrible idea.

Football works in cycles a lot of the time, the eight teams percieved to be the best the now probably won't be in ten years time.

Ten years ago you would have been laughed at for having the likes of Spurs, Man City and PSG ahead of the Milan clubs or even ahead of Lyon and Porto.

What is the obsession with having a closed shop in football and allowing the rich to get richer instead of fair competition over a Period of time.

There is already enough obsticles in place for percieved smaller clubs to get to the party.

I think the TV and marketing people would have something to say about reducing the numbers of teams but yes a lot of group games are dead rubbers but money rules now.

It doesn’t have to be a closed shop of 8 different teams, just take the 8 winners of the top European leagues each season

I have always found seeding in sport dodgy, of course football is not alone, tennis is a prime example.

A system designed to try and get a desirable final. But ultimately unfair.

I think the big countries have too much power. Now they don't have to qualify while the smaller countries. do that is unfair. The Scottish or Polish champions should qualify above any second place team from any country.

The competition is becoming a bit of a farce and I don't see it changing soon. When Real Madrid have 20 European Cups in a few years it will only denegrate it further.

    8 is great!
    quality before quantity!

quote "It has long been bemoaned that the Champions League has turned its back on the old European Cup’s traditional knockout heritage. Well a 48-team Champions League might redress that balance.

Group stage: 16 groups of 3 teams {4 matches per club}.
After the group stage 16 teams would remain.
    Knockout Rounds
Second round the 16 group winners.
    quarter-finals,
    semi-finals
    Final

Moreover, the demands on the teams would be less than they are now. A team making the final would play two home-and two away group stage matches – a total of four.
Then there would be 3 two-legged knockout rounds to reach the final instead of the current four. That’s a total of 11 ties comparing to the current total of 13 matches.
But what it would give us is more worthwhile matches – where points are worth more – and where the knockout rounds are reinvigorated after the winter break.

FIFA does not get it right very often and the jury is very much still out on a 48-team World Cup. Perhaps the former UEFA general secretary Infantino has stumbled upon the perfect formula for his old company. A 48-team Champions League based on the World Cup? It might be just what we all need.

Hey, Salty. What's your opinion now, a few months later? Liverpool in the final and the big chance to end the "farce", eh? ;)

My point still stands mate, Real Madrid are there again, and if they win on Saturday they'll be on 13. The format is wrong and clearly skewed in the way of the big sides.

I think sometimes that some people have got the wrong balance between football and money.

they may have forgotten that it is a football competition to find the best club side in Europe [even if that is the same team or a different team each year] not just about earning money.

2 groups of 4 teams with group winners meeting in the final does exactly that find the best club side in Europe [even if that is the same team or a different team each year] whilst getting the balance between money and football just about right or as right as it can be.

Lets permanently go back to having 2 groups of 4 teams in the UEFA Champions League [group stage] with the 2 group winners meeting in the final because that does exactly that find the best club side in Europe [even if that is the same team or a different team each year] whilst getting the balance between money and [quality]football just about right or as right as it can be.
