Fairly certain that wasn't the case. It wasn't a set time as far as I recall and you were to serve extra ban. 3 years I think.

Wiki tends to agree with you, other sources seem to not. From my own personal memory I was pretty certain it was set years. I guess without the actual case reports or find a report that was written around the time we'll never know for certain.

English football clubs banned from Europe

In the aftermath, all English clubs were banned for five years from competing in Champions League and UEFA Cup play. Liverpool’s ban, at first indefinite, was eventually set at 10 years and then later reduced to six. From 1977 to 1984, English clubs had captured seven of eight European Cups, and their banishment from play was a blow to the country and the sport as a whole. Still, when the ban was announced, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave it her full support: “We have to get the game cleaned up from this hooliganism at home and then perhaps we shall be able to go overseas again.” The consequences did not end with the ban. Liverpool saw 14 of its fans found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Belgium in 1989 after a five-month trial. The fans were given three-year jail sentences, with half of the terms suspended.

Seems Liverpools ban was indefinite at first, then 10, later 6 years.

    You little fibber you :)

I'm not claiming anything if there is any period I remember clearly in football its the 80s.....i can can even recall the pub I heard Ratcliffe tell the story on Steven and Stevens leaving... I was on the same table as that hooligan who wrote the book
'scally' and there was more beak on the go than a Daniella Westbrook baby shower.

We've won that twice when it was called the Autoglass Trophy. Giants of the game.

His main reason for doing so seemed to be the attraction of European football, as the ban on English clubs was ongoing and Steven had been denied the chance to play in the European Cup with Everton as a consequence. So, after 299 appearances and 60 goals, Steven left Everton in a £1.5 million deal and went to Scotland.

Its probably fair to say quite a few players where swayed by the chance to compete in Europe, around that time.

Trevor Steven, Mark Hughes, Ian Rush, John Aldridge, Clive Allen, Gary Lineker to name a few all left during that period. Be churlish to think that wasn't amongst the reasons for them to leave, along with other considerations.

For the same reason Manchester City never win the European Cup.

Weak, bottling mentality when the pressure really hits. The difference with Everton is that it applies to all trophies.

When have Southampton ever been "massive" as a football club? If you were talking as a port, then that's a separate topic.
