Why don't more stadiums have roofs in the UK? Here's why...

So to conclude, what are the main reasons why more stadiums in the UK don’t have roofs?
    1. Cost – covering large capacity stadia with retractable roofs is a major project

    2. The fact that pitches need to be exposed to rain, wind and sunshine to maintain that finely manicured state

    3. Use – the practicalities of using the roofs can be prohibitive to play and rules where all concerned parties need to agree can be complicated

    4. Cost effective – if the stadium isn’t multiuse with a diary full of profitable events, a costly retractable roof is hard to justify

    5. Atmosphere – this one is totally subjective. Does playing under a roof increase or reduce the atmosphere of a match?

Could also have more to do with the fact that most of our stadiums are years old with different sized stands that makes a roof impossible. As well as the fact that most people don't care enough to want one.

The real question is why don't we have more Stuarty threads?

I go to the Marvel stadium here quite a lot and the roof is closed more often than not. The stadium is well ventilated, you can see parts off the pitch from outside the ground so the wind can circulate the air, and I have to say that watching T20 cricket of an evening with the roof closed is a great experience

Football is an outdoor sport. Sunny, pissing down or bloody freezing we still play the game. If you want to see a sport played under a roof stick to snooker.

Football stadiums don't need a roof because weather rarely affects a match. Not often does a match get called off due to rain for example. Drainage systems are in place for this.

Small ball sports such as Tennis and Cricket are the sports that require a roof. Obviously Wimbledon has 2 retractable roofs meaning Strawberry and Cream is now £50 for the next 10 years.

If they split the costs over two periods of four years, they would be more affordable.

It’s just not a requirement for football so it’s a pointless cost to clubs.

Other sports it is a requirement given weather permits play.

:whistle what does a 12-14 year old from Athens, Greece know about the cold, rainy nights at Stoke? Unless he's originally from Walsall which is only a short distance to Stoke? Jackson, is it you?

Stoke's cold, I grant you (coldest I've ever been at football was Vale Park in 1979).
But if you want cold and wet, you really need to look at Oldham - where it's been raining continuously since 1838.

No wonder Messi has never scored against them playing in the cold.

I've heard a lot about Jackson. Who the heck is he?

I am not related to him, but I take pride in knowing that my English are so good that they are confused with a native person's one.
