I don’t really understand those blaming the manager for choosing young players to take the penalty. We trust them to represent our country but not take a penalty? I’m also pretty sure that it would be the decision of the player, and the manager. we lost a penalty shootout. There’s no point playing the blame game, any of the guys taking a penalty could’ve missed
Asking a teenager who's never taken a penalty in a professional game before to take the decisive 5th penalty is unforgivable.
The blame 100% lies with Southgate. That game was ours to win and he cost us. The debate over the penalties has been had but yeah, absolute madness to throw on 2 lads just to take a penalty and also put Saka in that situation. As much as I appreciate what he has done for the team & country, I am beginning to lean towards Southgate going. I just don't think he has what it takes to get us over the line in those critical situations, it's pretty hard to take how we blew it on Sunday. Mancini would have won it from that position every single time. Southgate has laid a great foundation but I think a truly great manager could take it to the next level.
Southgate will continue being a lovely bloke to front the FA and England team, and because we have such a crop of players we'll continue to do well comparatively speaking. But when push comes to shove, I fear we won't win anything with Southgate. And maybe that's ok, winning something at international level is very hard and unlikely even for the very best, and we're at least going to be very competitive. But I don't think we'll get the maximum bang for our buck of this generation with Southgate, he's just not quite got it. Who else is there and who would have it? That's a tough one.
It's a shame Bournemouth's success has corrupted your mind view and has made you similarly spoiled and entitled as an England supporter. We've never had it so good FFS thanks to the man in charge I wouldn't want most of the forum members in the trenches with me as they lose support after one half bad game. We had a similarly talented or even better group of players 10, 20 years ago and only reached quarter finals at best under much more so called established managers. It's extremely unlikely we'd get anyone better than Southgate
Absolutely! That's what I meant in my last post. Also bringing in Rashford and Sancho only for taking the penalties after you gave both nearly no confidence through the whole tournament (except Sancho being in the starting lineup for the Ukraine match). Sometimes I'm under the impression that "you english guys" need this kind of "drama(lama)" ? Southgate could've washed out (a bit) the memories of his 1996 penalty but now he has created another bad memory. Not that I pity him now, he's not our coach (and I don't pity our last one either. Löw ****ed up royally in his last 2 tournaments) Would've been better for the poor guy (Saka) if Jorginho had scored another cool penalty like against Spain so he didn't have to take the last one anymore. It's all Jorginho's fault btw: Has Italy now taken over the role of Germany as the one to beat for you guys? I mean you lost against them in a final after penalty shootout whereas you lost against us "only" in 2 semi-finals in penalty shootouts? (2 semi-finals ps-losses < 1 final ps loss?)
Not sure that makes me spoiled and entitled, I've said positive things about Southgate in multiple posts. I am just very conscious that we lost on Sunday in the exact same manner to how we lost to Croatia, and it concerns me that he failed to recognise that at all.
That 'golden generation' didn't have much beyond the starting 11 (as great as many of that 11 were). Like we were screwed when one standout player such as Beckham, Owen, Rooney got injured. Now we can have Trent drop out pre tournament, or Foden go down during it, and barely even blink about it because we have 3 others in their place. Back in those starting 11s we were crowbarring people into positions e.g. Scholes or Gerrard on the left wing. Now we have natural fits all over the pitch. The only area we do really lack in comparison to that golden generation is CB. We could really do with working on that over the coming years. But in general we have a larger pool of talented and better balanced players now. Which is a credit to the systems in this country that have produced this crop over the last decade.
We looked much better than the world cup as a whole, our game management was excellent in alot of the knock out games. Granted mistakes were made in the final but like the team I actually think Southgate will grow from the experience and be better for it as well. It's madness to be calling for his head
I agree / share the hope that he'll learn and develop from it. I'm not desperate for him to go by any means, but I think it's fair (and inevitable) for questions to be debated.
Forget about the penalties Southgate lost this game before a ball was kicked with that negative lineup. All that attacking talent on the bench wasted. If England were on the other side of the draw they would've more than likely been out before the semis. Even a slightly more positive coach and they would have had a much better chance of winning that final in 90 minutes
Just seems like anyone that disagrees with him is spoiled and entitled. First it was only fans of elite clubs now it's the fact that Bournemouth's "success" has corrupted your mind For what it's worth, Southgate has surprised me this tournament as I couldn't see you going far after the first 2 games. The draw was kind but I didn't think you'd beat Germany and fair play to Southgate for that. He deserves at least the next world cup imo.
Do find the notion of sacking Southgate a year out from a World Cup after finishing 2nd in a Euros pretty insane.
I'm sorry but yes I do think people trying to hound out our most successful manager since Sir Alf are delusional. And I said that about Bournemouth fans because they were moaning all last season when they were in the playoffs as well so I legitimately do think the premier league years gave them abit of a sense of entitlement unfortunately
"Successful" is an interesting choice of words. He's still won nothing as a senior manager and let's not forget England were the bookies favourites to win it before a ball was kicked (something I didn't agree with but it's true). The only other two sides that were close was Belgium and France, neither of which England played. England were the favourites to win every match they played. I also don't agree with the fact he should be sacked but let's stop pretending it's some heroic underdog story and quit this nonsense of calling people spoiled, delusional and stating they have corrupted minds because they disagree with you. Get over yourself.
I barely met another Englishman who thought we had a great chance of winning at the start, bookies mean nothing so not really a valid argument Most people(myself included) were tipping France or Belgium. So whilst no it isn't a complete underdog story because we are still a good side, it is still a great achievement to get to a final. Something no other England manager has done bar Alf Ramsey, so Gareth Southgate has been successful in my eyes despite winning no trophies yet
If bookies mean nothing neither does what you or other Englishmen thought at the start. If you were the bookies favourites then obviously a lot of people were betting on England to win it. England were among the favourites whether you like it or not. They were also the favourites to win every match they played whilst also having home advantage in the majority of games.
he’s an adult and a professional football player, not a kid. I think it’s quite condescending to state that he’s too young! He also would’ve volunteered to take the penalties. I would also strongly suspect that they have been practising penalties, so he is probably one of the best at it, considering he was chosen to take 1 of the first 5 there’s nothing controversial here, it looks like we are trying to lay some blame on the manager, which is ridiculous. He deserves criticism for our tactics as we lost, but blaming him for letting a younger member of the team take a penalty is laughable Well if you want a snapshot of real football fans, then check out the threads on here. Very few gave us a chance as Chris stated. Most seemed to think we’d lose to Germany. Not al people that bet know the game, or are’s even fans. We certainly weren’t underdogs, but very few tipped us to win it seems
