The Iron Claw Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Holt McCallany, Based on the Von Erich wrestling family. Fritz Adkisson who was the father took his grandmother's family name Von Erich even though the Von Erich family had had a lot of bad luck over the years and were considered to be a cursed. Fritz never won the NWA world heavyweight championship and so he trained 4 of his 5 children to be wrestlers after the eldest son died at an early age. Its a really sad movie. Its hard to imagine that one family could have had so much bad luck. Fantastic movie. 7.5/10
Deadly Instincts [1997] Also apparently known as Breeders this so-called horror/sci-fi film is absolutely appalling. Sam Womack (née Janus) is quite perky in a film obviously filmed in Britain with a mostly British cast that purports to be set in a US college, the headmistress of which is Melanie Walters, best known as Stacey's mother Gwen in Gavin & Stacey. There's a meteorite and a shadowy alien thing, and some mind control for good measure. Ultra low budget clart. 3.003/10
Anatomy Of A Fall. It's Oscar season so I thought I'd give this one a watch as it's nominated in the Best flick list. It stars Sandra Huller who plays the wife of a bloke who falls out of a window of their very nice chalet somewhere in France and dies a s a result (the background is very scenic). Or was he pushed? It's a courtroom drama but it's very well done. I liked it.. 7.98976/10
@Panja Your thoughts on the dog & the kid? Spoiler The kid's reaction to the verdict was tremendous acting. & the dog in that overdose scene. Both were amazing.
Blacklight Liam Neeson has a specific set of skills and is chasing bad guys at the age of 80. Could be any Liam Neeson movie tbh this one was alright but nothing groundbreaking. 6/10
Spoiler That's where it fell down a bit for me. The screenwriter should have spent time with a child that age to know what he would have thought, he was way too adult in his dialogue for me. The dog made me want to go out and buy a Border Collie immediately.
That’s good to hear. I thought the first part was brilliantly done. 1 of my favourite films of recent years even though it’s just a remake. Can’t wait to see this
It's long, but there is a lot more action this time. If you don't mind long movies you're in for a blast i recommend seeing it in the cinema.
Poor Things - 9.5/10 Really, really enjoyed this. The filmmaker is well known now for making quite challenging but still accessible films. I'd say this was challenging but his most accessible that I've seen. Helped by the fantasy-like settings they used/created. Emma Stone crushes in this as the lead, and that performance really deserves an Oscar. Same for Ruffalo, who I have always thought was a bit one note and generally played the nice, fairly safe, guy in big films. But here he is both detestable and hilarious. Best I've seen him.
The Boys In The Boat Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner Based on a true story. Set during the great depression, University of Washington has to assemble a junior 8 man rowing team to compete against the senior team. The team is largely comprised of poor students who enlist because its a paying position. In those days the best Universities in the US would compete in the Poughkeepsie Regatta and whoever wins would go to the Olympics. When I saw that it was a movie directed by George Clooney my first reaction was... oh great... rich guy gets bored and decides to make a movie with his millions to spare. I was reminded of Rachel McAdams Cocaine Bear, a movie that came out with a lot of hype and anticipation but truth be told most 12 year olds who make reels would have made a better movie. It starts off average but then it picks up. Its absolutely riveting. George Clooney has done a magnificent job. I am surprised that so few people have heard of this movie that came out recently. The race scenes are shot brilliantly. Stars the bloke who plays Major Egan on Masters of the Air. Best movie I have watched in a while. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. 8/10
Damsel 7/10. I'm not fussy when it comes to fantasy movies/shows so I knew i'd enjoy this before lashing it on earlier. Basic plot for me understand and enough action/tense moments to keep me entertained from start to finish.
Zone Of Interest. Incredible movie, just a normal family doing normal things in and around the house where the garden wall separates a nice vegetable garden on one side and the biggest Nazi concentration camp on the other. The background sounds are the most disturbing thing about the film, you can hear the noise from the crematoria and the occasional gunshot, as well as the noise of the trains arriving and the guard dogs barking. Harrowing. 7.989/10
Spaceman (netflix). Well this is pretty much been slaughtered in its reviews. It was a cross between gravity/Ad Astra/Interstellar, and it's not as good as any of them. I thought it was a watchable film but about 25 minutes too long. 5/10.
Yeah that’s pretty much me as well. I liked the twist to the traditional story and thought it was good Ive never even heard of this until last night. Your synopsis has me intrigued. I’m gonna have to give this a watch
If you haven't watched it or Googled it yet, the story follows the everyday family life of the camp commandant, Rudolph Hoess, who ran Auschwitz/Birkenau for three years.
i finally had nothing to do and watched the marvels. it was alright for about half and hour and absolutely fell apart. it tried to start like spiderman and ended up like she hulk, and that's bad.
i saw it won an Oscar and saw your little write up. Sounds intriguing, I’m just settling down to it now!
I didn't find this remotely harrowing I'm afraid. The sounds from the horror on the other side of the wall are noticable but pretty random; gunfire, some shouting/screaming and steam trains. Otherwise we are watching the German family of Hoss, the Commandant, and their dog which seems to wander in and out of just about every scene going about their business. Obviously the clash of everyday family life and genocide separated by the thickness of a wall is the point of the film, I just don't think it's emphasised enough. 6.607/10
The Beekeeper. Jason Statham stars for a change in a violent film. A revenge movie when someone he cares about is targeted by scammers. Actually enjoyed this even if the fight scenes were a bit silly.
