And I'm a massive fan of The God Machine, a short lived band (1991-1993) that split up after the bassist tragically died of a brain tumour. They had only put out one album and a few ep's before his death but thankfully the second album was already recorded and was released a year later. They were signed to Fiction records and I think Robert Smith had something to do with it as he was a big fan of the band at the time.

But yeah I agree, the cover's good but the original's better.

    That's not Kurt Cobain.

I think the greatest cover, or most popular, would be Sinead’s version of the little fellas hit wouldnt it?

    Anyways, here’s the worst;

    unforgivable really.

    WRONG.

I like Buckley, but Cohen's version is vastly superior.

I like Marianne Faithfull's version a lot. Reminds me of a Pink Floyd song off The Wall. Which is funny because they were released the exact same month it turns out.

Bad Romance is a great song and I like the original but was always likely to favour a rock cover and I think Halestorm's version is briliant.

    Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

    Bad Romance - Halestorm

This next one I think I like both versions about the same but it's always great to have 2 or more versions of a song that are very strong and appeal to different people.

    Losing My Religion - R.E.M

Losing My Religion - Lacuna Coil

I'm not sure who was the actual first but this was my introduction to the song.

I'm gussing this was the inspiration.

Found this recently - to prompt the post.

and another great version from Groundhog Tony McPhee.

    and Jimmie Rodgers (1932)

Is it the same song? I think not - just inspired by...

    Blue Yodel No. 10

    Blue Yodel No. 10

Blue Yodel No. 10 (Ground Hog Rootin’ in My Back Yard)

Words and music by Jimmie Rodgers, 1932.

Something about you, mama, sure gives me the blues. Hey, hey.
Something about you, mama, sure gives me the blues.
It ain’t your drop stitch stockings. It ain’t your blue buckle shoes.
    Hey, hey.

    Yodelay-ee-holay-hee-holay-hee

You know sweet mama, I’m bound to love you some. It’s the truth honey.
You know sweet mama, I’m bound to love you some.
‘Cause I’ve done more for you than anybody ever done.
    You know it, baby.

    Yodelay-ee-holay-hee-holay-hee

Got me a pretty mama; got me a bulldog too. Sure have!
Got me a pretty mama; got me a bulldog too.
My pretty mama don’t love me, but my bulldog do.

    Yodelay-ee-holay-hee-holay-hee

There’s been a groundhog rootin’ ’round my yard at night. Hey hey.
There’s been a groundhog rootin’ ’round my yard at night.
From the way my mama been treatin’ me, he must be rootin’ all right.

Lawd honey, he must be rootin’ all right.

    Yodelay-ee-holay-hee-holay-hee

I ain’t no sheik man, don’t try vamp no girl.
I ain’t no sheik man, don’t try vamp no girl.
It’s my reg’lar grinding gets me by in this world.

    Yodelay-ee-holay-hee-holay-hee

Collected from Victor 23636, as sung by Jimmie Rodgers, recorded February 6, 1932.

    Prowlin' Groundhog
This song is by Willie Lane and appears…

Some dirty groundhog been rootin' my back yard
Some dirty groundhog been rootin' my back yard
Way that fool's been rootin', he sure done made my good road hard

Boy, it roots every mornin', and it roots way late at night
Man, it roots every mornin', people, and it roots way late at night
Way my black woman treat me here lately, he must be rootin' all right

I know that he's rootin', but I thought he's rootin' right straight down
I know that he's rootin', but I thought he's rootin' right straight down
I found out about four o-clock this mornin', boy, that fool's rootin' 'round and 'round

I'm gon' get a great big old pistol, and here's just what I'm gonna do
Great big old pistol, tell you just what I'm gonna do
I'm goin' and find that old groundhog, cut his rooter right half in two

I once went to see a U2 tribute band.

They were even better than the real thing.
