They just don’t score enough. Even if their defence is still good, if you’re only scoring at just over one a game, it only takes a slight blip in the conceded column and you’re really struggling.
No time for any beers, by the time we'd driven round and round the Uni car park before ending up just abandoning the car outside of the parking bays, we barely got in before kick-off. That's our second sold out game of the season, The Shaymen are quite the crowd pullers. You're welcome.
Nothing was ever going to be decided last night, even though it looks like, and probably is, a damaging result. The only question I pose to those who are more critical of Hurst than me is this - what did you realistically expect us to achieve this season?
You should have asked, I would have heavily advised against parking there. Thanks so much, but I think we have only had 2 or 3 home games that have not been sold out this season.
The ‘foul’ that led to the free kick which Maidenhead scored the winner from haha. Not arsed as season is over but just thought it was more than worthy of posting, got to laugh.
Only listened to the game but I'd be interest to know what you think he didn't learn from looking at the line up. You criticise when he starts coke and plays defensive. Last night seemed the opposit of that, no coke, JMD probably our best goalscorer on the few games he's played, two fans first choice strikers, new attacking midfielder striaght into the line up. Yet we still seemed devoid of any attacking in the first half and second half we yet again squandered chances. Other than not signing a decent striker this season, what did he not learn in regards to last night's line up and how the game went?
Was an unbelievable decision, but as I said before, a lot of people bleating about the ref, that was the only decision he got properly wrong all game and it didn't directly lead to the goal, we had ample chance to clear the ball but instead decided to piss about in our own box and watch Maidenhead score. It's sadly masked what was a terrible performance both from players and management and shows just how far away we are from being a contender next season.
Yeah, I'm with the latter two posts here in that I thought he picked a very positive lineup by dropping Coke who I think has done well of late but forms a very limited midfield with Burgess and by dropping Sousa who has been absolutely crap of late. However, I'm also fully with Lew in that this is becoming very draining. There has to come a point when we admit there's at least somewhat of a mentality problem here as the amount of decent performances we put in against the promotion contenders vs the amount of points we pick up is quite frankly absurd. More silly mistakes last night which need stamping out as we can't play the way Hurst wants us too and make silly mistakes. We need reinforcements in all areas and I'm now willing to admit that we aren't going up this season. I don't think this season has been a disaster by any stretch of the imagination though. We've got the solid nucleus of a squad in place and if we manage to keep those currently in the squad who are good enough and shed all the deadwood then we're in a good position to kick on next season. We're well ahead of where we were at this point in our first season down here last time too. I think any side that comes down from League Two in the state we were and is in the playoff hunt going into the final quarter/third of the season hasn't had a bad season at all. It's also encouraging that we've offered a two year deal to a player with a proven record down here. It was clear that their entire team is well drilled in a few special shithousery moves, so it's no wonder their supporters don't like it when a ref doesn't fall for their tricks as it's almost as though they've convinced themselves that they're following the rules. The one that stood out for me on Saturday was them going down as soon we looked like we were about to break. I think I saw more "head injuries" from them than I have in all other matches combined that I've been to this season. Another one they tried to pull was them being given the ball for a freekick after one of their players had gone down of their own accord (not fouled and by that I mean there wasn't even an incident here, it was off the ball, like a player getting cramp) when we had possession and then when the ref stopped play and indicated it'd be a drop ball they were demanding we give them the ball from the drop ball.
Exactly this, an attacking line up and second half it was wave after wave of attacks and it just seemed a matter of time before we put it to bed and if Clifton’s shot goes in off the post instead of rolling across the goal line we win that comfortably and everybody’s happy. Not sure what more Hurst could’ve done there to change anything.
Even when we were top of the table, I never really thought that we would bounce straight back up this year. The game that really persuaded me of that was quite early on in the season away at Maidenhead. I came away from that feeling we would need more and better options in the forward areas than what we had at that stage if we were going to sustain a challenge. We have started to build that squad and signings like Maguire-Drew and Holohan are encouraging in that respect. But history tells us that very few sides in this era win promotion from the National League at the first attempt and anyone who thought we should have done so was kidding themselves in my view. I don't go to as many games as I once did, for various reasons, and that may be a factor in why I don't find results like last night's as draining as others. But there's another thing too. Fifteen months ago, I pledged that I would not set foot inside Blundell Park until the poisonous, discredited regime that had done so much damage to our club in the preceding period had been removed. I know many others took a similar stance. I took mine knowing that it might well be many years, if ever, before I went back. But I also knew that with no change, there was no hope for our future. Regardless of how this season turns out, we still have that hope for the future. Our counterparts down the A180 may well wish they could say the same.
Devonshired!!! I was at a presentation last night, so didn't hear any updates, got in the car at 10.15 to hear we'd lost 2-1 to a really dodgy free kick, given by the ref who gave us a really dodgy penalty against Kings Lynn at The Hall. Correction to the above, it was a late change in official and wasn't he of the Kings Lynn penalty decision, but some Derbyshire based Chesterfield supporter who must have thought we were getting too close for comfort lol.
To be fair that is a shocker....but we are more used to the refs down here, so not really a surprise.
I wasn't there but not too unhappy with what happened, easy to say having been spared it. But that 11 last night was very start of season with no athleticism and little attacking threat. Only 1 player with above average pace, 1 player with any creativity, 1 player with any height. Far too easy to play against and beat. It's been a great 3 months but our squad is still miles away and I think it'll do everyone good to be reminded of that. We need more skill, more speed and more height injected this summer and I'm sure the management team know it too. Glad Dunne is suspended. When we have Gard and Wood in the squad not getting games, and Husin unavailable, Dunne playing was a horrid call by Maher. Useless.
