You can have this debate forever. Modern players couldn't cope with old mudbath pitches and genuinely hard, vicious players who would literally try to break some bones in their tackles and referees who would do nothing to protect players effectively getting bullied.

But the other side is that modern players are significantly fitter and more athletic than old players and more tactically astute too. They don't drink lots of alcohol and smoke, they don't play with hangovers and sometimes even have drinks and fags at half time. Professionally the difference is night and day and ultimately if you had a match between 11 fit modern players and 11 top 70s players in the exact same physical condition that they were in the 70s, they'd simply get pulled apart over a whole 90 minutes.

I think if it was possible to teleport the different generations together and have them play each other all in their respective primes, I think the fitness and athleticism of the modern players would ultimately win over.

It's a pointless question though because players can only really be judged by the standards of their own generation. Would modern players who are practically athletes beat the old players if they were played against each other over a league season? In my opinion, yes. The fitness and professionalism would tell over a whole season. However that doesn't mean they are necessarily better players because who knows how good a 70s or 80s player would be if they had been given the the training, diet and sports science that modern players have access to. I prefer to judge players by their own generations and enjoy them for what they are. Messi is a genius and has deservedly won a World Cup. I don't think anyone can argue against that. Maybe Maradona with a better lifestyle would have eclipsed Messi's heights, maybe he wouldn't have. But it doesn't take away from his achievements either way.

The only team who struggles on a cold night in Stoke these days is Stoke City.

Definitely didn't carry them like. Messi, Enzo Fernandez, De Paul & Alvarez were all great too.

What a match. Greatest ever player wins the greatest ever final.

That 2nd Argentina goal was a thing of beauty, the French comeback after being dominated for 75 minutes was astonishing, a glorious extra time, just remarkable in all aspects.

That Martinez save at the end of extra time, with everything riding on it, most probably the greatest ever too.

A far better game than everything contributing to this world cup deserved. And yes, very pleased the GOAT has his World Cup.

As much as I loathe Ronaldo, I worry a little about what this year will have done to him!
He prides himself on his longevity and fitness. I'm sure he felt he would be at the top forever. Instead, he found himself as a squad player for United, before leaving on bad terms. He then found himself dropped from the national starting line-up, only for his replacement to do really well. On top if it all, he is continually compared to Messi and now sees Messi (about a year and a half younger) go on to win the world cup and be voted the player of the tournament
His mental state must be seriously in question right now and unless he has amazing support from those close to him, I fear he may go completely crazy and maybe even do something really stupid. As much as I dislike him, I don't wish such torment on anyone!

Never have I seen a more intense final, or a more deserving end result.

Take a bow, Leo. UNDOUBTEDLY the greatest ever to play the beautiful game...

His presence was merely enough to inspire the others to score.

Think Messi bows out here. What a story.

Tbh Piers trolling has been pretty good.
