Apparently this is the first time that seven batters have scored 35+ in an ODI. Jamie will have to get a move on to make it eight..
Four byes off the last ball gets England to 400/8. Good couple of overs at the death for the Windies when it looked like we might get 420 only nine scored off those last twelve deliveries. Brilliant knock by Bethel, apparently Brian lara saw him when he was batting in Barbados when he was eleven years old and told the young Jake that he was a better player than him at that age. The brightest of futures lies ahead. 401 to win.
We have a new world record: this is the 4,880th men's ODI, and the first in which a team has reached 400 without a single batter scoring a century. Just out of interest, the highest score that the Windies have chased down is 328 against Ireland six years ago.
Very difficult to see past a 3-0 whitewash on that showing. The Windies actually had the best bowling conditions and still went at ten an over. Cardiff up next, weather permitting that should be another fast scoring game..
8 an over surely..... (400 / 50 = 8) anyway, sometimes windies punch above their weight, in ODIs, not yesterday found it funny in the article suggestion England were "a bowler light" (because Overton was first change), not any more than some of the time with Mahmood, Carse, Overton plus Bethell and Rashid with Jacks not used - not sure why in the side and not even bowling when down the order, maybe the Overton 'role' If you (someone) want(s) to be critical everyone 1-7 made 37+ but no one made it past 82, maybe a distinct possibility going for speed over occupation of crease, but when all seven are caught you know the pitch is begging for a hundred. Also the navy at the bottom, navy Seales, top scorer yet no mention I can see on the report of how often #11 has been top scorer in an ODI innings and indeed totals (by size), instead a lot of waffle about obvious and some stats might seem OTT under the circumstances (biggest total in 3 years, best vs Test nation since World Cup, as if suggesting "they're back" where they never were, not consistently)
no worries three drops by England early doors 2nd ODI, windies heading to 200 for 2 down and around 15 overs left of course beeb announced 1st ODI a day or two ago, England vs West Indies, really wish for clarity's sake they'd put "women's" at the front. I mean they go to great lengths to put eg Curran (S) in scorecards even when only one is playing and it says which one at the bottom, but I've even seen them not put anything when they might have 2-3 Ali s, or some other fairly common name in other countries. Not convinced the England bowling attack in ODIs is all that, Carse, Mahmood, Potts/Overton, and Rashid is nearing retirement age so Jacks and Bethell as fifth bowler is a bit vulnerable. Compare to the World Cup final, Archer, Wood, Stokes, Woakes, Plunkett, Rashid, a little light of batting at the tail end - in the final went from 196/4 (44.4 overs) to 241 all out, Plunkett 10, Woakes 2, Archer, Rashid and Wood didn't trouble the scorers with two run out for their ducks. Good RR at the death, well relatively anyway, 45 off 32 balls, but thanks mainly to the captain, a kiwi as I type they pass 200, and then lose Carty albeit stumped (off Jacks
Oh dear. 309 to win didn’t seem that big an ask when Duckett and Smith walked out but now Duckett and Smith have both walked back in with very little on the board. Big repair job for Harry and Joe here with lots of overs to patch the damage up..
That was easily Joe’s best ODI innings. Coming in to bat so early, seeing top batsmen going cheaply around him and holding it together when Joseph was bowling so well. Becomes England's highest run scorer with that knock and goes over 7000 runs at a smidge under 50. Not bad..
Just watched the highlights this morning. England dodged a bullet there, a bullet that was dropped numerous times and whistled past the stumps when the stumps should have been shot down. Take Root's majestic innings away from this and England are 146-7. If the umpire had have lifted that digit of his when Joe was in single figures - and umpires call would have meant he was out - then we would have lost heavily here. Must do better..
The toss for the third and final ODI has been delayed, not because of the rain, of which there is a bit in the air, but because the away team's bus is stuck in traffic. I wonder if the driver thought the game was at Lords?
England won the toss and are rightly bowling in perfect conditions but you have to say this is terrible from Carse and Mahmood.
Very ordinary bowling by England’s seamers on a pitch offering loads. Too many full deliveries to hit to the ropes and not helped by Harry’s often weird field placing.. 68-3 from the power play. Can’t help by feel Woakes would have had three of his own by now..
