B*llshit, we signed Madden last year for £15k and he ended up as top goalscorer.

Just got to look hard enough. Not all good signings have to been fantastic at the previous club (and therefore carry a hefty fee) for them to be prolific.

You obviously missed the point of my post.

Obviously you can sign players on the cheap who could potentially turn out to be goal scorers, but you can't buy an already proven goalscorer, as Kirk was, for less than 400k even at this level.

At the time, we thought you got him on the cheap, and expected him to work his way up the divisions. Didn't work out, and he's now at Alloa Athletic, but had a decent record with Dunfermline until their administration.

Steve Howard (who most fans thought was just what we needed last season). He's not only been absolutely terrible, his wages have made our owners hide behind FFP as their excuse for us not signing anybody.

Maybe start a new thread - 'signings who have destroyed/are destroying your club'

Pompey will have a few of that last category, hardly the players fault though. Get offered so much, you take it!

As anyone would in any job whether they admit it or not.

We were so hopeful that he'd bugger off in the summer after somehow doing well on loan with Sheff Wed (during which time he slagged the club off and said he should've only signed for us in a few years )

But no. No one was remotely interested in 'Big Stevie' so we're lumbered with him for the rest of his contract. Him and the board are taking us to the Conference.

    Yes, fortunately.

As for someone mentioning Simon Walton, do you fancy him back? He's been dreadful for us.

Steve Howard was good a few years ago; your archetypal battering ram who's caused us plenty of problems in the past, ironically after we got rid of him last time for not being up to the mark.

Fast forward 12 or so years and he's come full circle. The only problem now is that he's too arrogant to realise that he's not got it any more. His scoring record is horrendous over the last few years and whenever I've seen him turn out for us, he's looked unfit, disinterested and a shadow of the player he was a number of years ago. He claims that his teammates are not on his wavelength yet whenever a cross comes in (which he apparently thrives on) he's 30 yards away from it in no man's land.

He needs to get a grip and retire or sign for some other mug as he's not welcome here and is stopping us re-shaping the squad after a few years of mediocrity
