Hoping we can be that cheeky bastard who always jumps the queue!

Lets be honest. Everyone will want southend to go up given their financial difficulties of recent years. They have been down here longer, its a fairy tail we get it. Id be backing southend as well if i were neutral.

But latics are not without their torrid history and there probably couldnt be 2 more deserving, desperate for success fanbases in this final than the 2 who made it. No football club should have to endure the times both clubs have, and its a final that will hold a torch light of hope for.all the other clubs out there struggling with off field issues at present.

I get the comment that southend are the team you wanted least in the final. Ive said as much myself, bit im actually beginning to believe mellon has an answer for everything. Whether thats nieve or not i dont know, but we havent really seen the mantra until now that he is built for knock out football.

Maybe, just maybe, this is our time?

    Its true

I’m split, on one hand I live in stalybridge so Oldham is my best chance of getting to a Carlisle game.

but I’ve followed Carlisle for nearly 40 years, I think the first time I as such encountered Oldham was in 1996 time and in all that time what is it 30 odd years I cannot remember Oldham having a promotion or a big success…….they can tell me different I don’t follow them, just a constant steady decline from top league to fifth league.

if that were true even with all southends previous issues Oldham fans deserve their promotion chance.

If Oldham are the home team does that mean they the green man or does it not work like that

It will be great to see either of these two back in the Football League. I'll look forward to watching that final now.

Yeah I think that's right. Think their last promotion was 1993 when they went up to the Premier League. Ever since they've just slowly slid down the divisions and never got back up every time they went down. Definitely a club that deserves something to cheer and I think that's why I'll side with them as a neutral.

Southend have obviously had some terrible times recently and nearly went bust. But at least they've had a couple of spells in the Championship this century and they've had some ups to go with their downs. Oldham's just been one long, slow down.

Correct. Since that relegation from the premier league we have suffered 4 relegations, a 21 year stint in league 1, only 2 play off finishes in that time, both failing at the 1st hurdle. Theres also some other stat where until we finished 12th 2 seasons ago, we had gone something like 13 straight seasons with bottom half finishes, although im not 100% on that one.

Before promotion to division 1 (premier league) in 1991, you have to go back to the 70's for the one before that. So thats 1 promotion in nearly 50 years

There have also been 2 unscrupulous owners that almost ran us out of business, and sandwiched between them was a 15 year stint where simon corney and co rinsed us dry.

We have a bad rep generally down here, for being the billy big bollox all over the socials, but thats born from a sheer frustration that we are so unsuccessful, and desperate for success.

Considering you are so starved of success, does it mean you will be bringing down loads?

Well that is normal they bugger up everything around Wembley whenever Wembley is used.

it must be something about that area of the country that they are success deprived for long periods because I do certainly remember in the 90’s the constant talk was always about how Rochdale had done nothing but sit about division 4/3/L2 for nearly 30-40 years doing nothing, now that mantle has passed onto near neighbours Oldham once, Dale finally got their first promotion years ago.

Southend have suffered but I think Oldham fans deserve it and maybe in a sign of fate for them this has been the season of clubs ending massive long waits for success……Newcastle, Palace, Tottenham…….maybe next Oldham??!

No offence to the FGR lot on here who are all sound but buzzing for Southend. Hopefully you do it, definitely served your time. Would love another trip to Roots Hall.

We have a strong london/ southern section of our fanbase which should boost numbers, but given the distance i think the general consensus is overestimating our support. Id be absolutely made up if we could take 20,000 but i just dont see it. We will be outnumbered easily id imagine

Congrats - year of the underdog continues! I am loving the symmetry with our titles in the same years.

Also pissed off I didn't take up the early bird offer for the final £20 for an adult & a kid compared to about £60 now (shame we were so far clear at the time ;-). Really thinking about going as we have a few Southend/Essex boys in the office & my little boy hasn't been to Wembley (and no chance of ever seeing Barnet there with our record).

Great stuff from TFL. Wembley barely in use bar a few weekends a year (all around this time of year). But let's do the works then on key tube lines.

We really are a bizarre little country at times.
