Oh. I figured Tse Tse Fly was just cranky about his career tanking over the past couple of years. Altmaier reacted like I would have, drifting away from him as in I don’t need or deserve such crap. Tommy Paul kept us ‘Murricans up till 1:40 AM, two hours after he failed twice to clinch in 3 sets. Nuno Borges has better groundstrokes and it should have earned him victory but he petered out a bit at the very end…kinda like Brooksby did in his match tiebreaker earlier. We’re now down to 4 courts for singles. Felix Auger-Aliassime enjoyed the last “true side court” experience on a jam-packed, standing-room-only ‘grounds-pass-fans-on-their-12th-hour’ Court 5 at 10:30 PM. Those are always the best scenes of a tournament.
You would think Raducanu was American given how biased the crowd is, instead of actually being a Canadian-born Chinese/Romanian. Hope Rybakina finished her off quickly..
Yes well beaten and outclassed . Vondrusova looking good against Paolini. Easy for Sinner . Sad to see Ben Shelton having to pull out of his match v Mannarino at 2 sets all.
Give it up to our own Taylor Townsend who pummeled Mirra Andreeva last night. Hey, Court 5 is back for singles, for one more day. Maybe the doubles players and fans complained that none of it was available on Grandstand or Hashish Stadium 17 yesterday. Accordingly, 3 doubles matches across those two venues today, including Venus’ 2nd rounder. That means 3 singles matches go to court 5. Most intriguing one being two relative unknowns: …Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak (beat Kachanov in a match tiebreaker) vs Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi (2 sets down to tough Argie Cerundulo, came back to win.) I like Altmaier vs de Minaur on hash court 17, too. Finally, Cuckoo Coco gets another chance to choke to open the day on Ashe Stadium. And there’s football (both Euro and American College) to watch. POSTSCRIPT: Sinner loses the opening set 7-5 to Shapovalov.
Osaka and kostyuk through in 3 sets . Tough on Majchrzak having to retire early v Riedi. Zverev and Tommy Paul knocked out .
FAA is back! Looking Canada-lean-and-mean beating Zverev. Tough Rublev tomorrow. Alexander Bublik had some serious goods against Tommy Paul; are they enough v Sinner tomorrow? Hoping Djokovic gets Struffed tonight. And it’s Taylor-Time this afternoon (Townsend!) and tonight (Fritz!)
Oh dear Taylor Townsend. Threw away a number of match points in the second set in a 15-13 the break but Krejčíková played well to hold and come through.
If she’d just flipped a coin on each of her 8 match points, her odds of losing were 1 in 256. Krejcikova hitting so many lines on those match points was reminiscent of the Washington men’s final a month ago. Spain’s Alejandro Davidovitch-Fokina was in tears, post-match, same as Taylor Townsend yesterday. On that day, Alex de Minaur hit the outside of lines several times on the 4 or 5 match points against the Aussie. During the final ceremony, he consoled his opponent, that he was just lucky to have prevented the Spaniard from seizing his first tournament trophy. So yesterday was a combination of Townsend’s nerves making her hit balls too softly, Krejcikova’s great determination and grit, and yes…some luck. Nobody’s shots are so accurate as aiming for and hitting a line so precisely.
Coco should follow Medvedev’s example and start crushing racke, er no, I mean fire her coach and find a new one. And forget about ads or other marketing opportunities; it’s clearly a menacing distraction to playing tennis well. Your game is a mess for your level.
Two one sided affairs over night . Onto the last 8 now . Anisimova will hope to be competitive this time v Swiatek ! Vondrousova has pulled out of her match v Sabalenka.
Thought Fritz might have beaten Djokovic today but not to be. Think he is going to be another Zverev/Tsitsipas in that he won’t win a major. Djokovic going to have to get past Alcaraz and probably Sinner if he wants number 25.
It was good to see Taylor Townsend in better spirit yesterday on the doubles court, finally ending Venus’ & Leylah’s unexpected run to the QF. Top 4 seeded ladies’ doubles duos to the semis. Fritz emanated an I’ll NEVER beat this guy vibe all last night.
