Considering Gerrard has flopped badly in his last two managerial jobs, for him to turn Rangers down is a pretty damning indictment of how bad things must be behind the scenes. It's not like Gerrard is going to have teams knocking the door down to offer him a job.
But I do think it might more to do with Gerrard himself than Rangers. He'll have earned enough money out in Saudi, where he may feel retaking the Rangers job just isn't worth the stress - especially if the league title is already out of reach this season.
Danny Rohl apparently favourite, his success in saving Sheffield Wednesday apparently making him the ideal choice to lead a team who expect to win every game and every trophy.
The "highest" level he's achieved anything is SPL, it may be this season is a write off certainly in terms of the league but gives him a chance to feel his way back in......... had he not ruled out a return ("timing" not right?) based on what he's achieved to date his best bets are some mid table club (like villa were) gambling on him, a lower level, or SPL he may feel the timing isn't right, but Rangers may not take kindly to rejection and not offer again, wouldn't take kindly to a second rejection BUT he's no great loss to the world of management so in truth who really cares....? Celtic fans may have twitched a little in case he could repeat previous success, truth is he shouldn't have left, was waaaaay too soon for a step up as he'd proven a round about nothing or near enough
I can just about see why Villa appointed him at the time they did.But i can't see any club in a similar situation appointing him now and rightly so.
I can understand the concerns about Rohl given the apparent similarities between him and Martin. But one thing that ought to work in Rohl's favour is that he at least left his previous job with his reputation enhanced. Martin did not, which is one of the reasons why his appointment always seemed odd from the start. The very fact he's in the first few in the betting probably tells us a lot about the state Rangers are in the moment. I just wonder whether going back to him might at least buy an ownership that is clearly under massive pressure a bit of time from the fans.
I'm not aware of how much you know about The Rangers so apologies if I come across as patronising. If Barry Ferguson (or any The Rangers "legend") was appointed and wore a pair of brown brogues, they would be hailed as a messiah if The Rangers won against Celtic in the league Cup semi final and lost every other game of the season including the league Cup final. It would 100 per cent buy the board the rest of this season. The problem then is they'll then acquire this strange belief that they are actually still Rangers Football Club and proceed to have weird beliefs that the likes of Luka Modric might still fancy a final challenge in their career in f***ing Govan.
Kevin Muscat in the running, lol. Bloke was an absolute wrong'un on the pitch and I remember him getting in a few rucks on the sidelines when managing Melbourne Victory in the A-League. He'd definitely get them fighting, which is probably what they're missing, but there's a reason he's stayed in Aus/Asia for so long. Would be funny to watch anyway.
Slaven bilic also getting a bit of backing. What could go wrong for him being head coach of The Rangers
Bilic reminds me of a Pardew type. Everyone loves him in his first year then he gets found out tactically and it all falls to shit. His West Ham side were dreadful by the time he left. Sounds exactly like the kind of manager Rangers would appoint.
