That explains it. Other FF members don't care about the 2022 WC but Cassio is the only one to actually hate it.

A lot of my mates absolutely despise the Italians for winning it in 2006 too. They really pissed off a lot of people that year.

    Same here.
I was 12 in 2006, I remember very well the 2006 WC, but I don't know how it was before.
France is definitely the most """hated""" national team here. Maybe also for the Zidane-Materazzi thing, I don't know lol Or maybe just because we are neighboring.

With Germany is different, there is huge respect even if there is a great rivalry. We wouldn't accept a defeat against them either, don't get me wrong  But with France is different, don't know why.

In a hypothetical final Germany vs France, people here would support 100% Germany, believe it or not.

You mean "old" rivalries because we can't manage to qualify anymore? :D

This was really bad from Zidane. Our "persona non grata" was Ronald Koeman at the Euro 1988

Same here. Huge respect for the Italians. Always hard fought battles (with the "Game of the Century" at the WC 1970 in the semis)
You guys so often denied us a final (ok, we could still manage to get the most finals of all countries but it could be even more if not for the Italians). I still don't forget the quarter final victory in penalty shootout at the Euro 2016, our first ever win against Italy in a major tournament (although only in penalty shootout). Me and my mates had tears in our eyes.

yet you managed to win the Nations League group although could only manage a 1-1 draw and 2-5 loss against us. Bloody Magyars denied us ;)

“persona non grata” is literally italian

Yeah I remember very well that match, I almost had tears in my eyes but for the opposite reason

There is “funny” thing that people here usually say every time we face Germany: “Con voi ci abbiamo perso solo da alleati”, which literally means “The only time we lost against you, we were allies”
    It’s a reference to WW2, but it’s clearly goliardic.

Really? I learned the expression in Latin in school

    :D

    :D

Yeah, we still have a negative record against Italy, although it's not that bad

    38 matches: 11 Wins - 12 Draws - 15 losses, 50:53 Goals

Although the wins in friendlies makes this a bit friendlier. In major tournaments it's still the one win in 2016

I know ;). As mentioned I learned (a bit) Latin in school (besides English and French which were mandatory here).
Plural must be "personae non gratae" in Latin if I remember it right. That would be in analogy the whole Netherlands team in 1988:laugh:

I really liked Latin, too bad it's a dead language (except for the catholic church ). I was only astonished that it is also used in Italian language. Are there many references to old Latin in the italian language? (OK, I mean the roman empire had it's "headquarter" in the later Italian capital so it's only natural that there are roots in language, too)

btw: The draws in World Cups and Euros above were of course "only" group stage matches. The losses mostly semi-finals plus a WC final.
The most painful loss for us Germans wasn't the semi-final loss in 1970 or even the final loss in 1982. It was the semi-final loss 2006 with 0-2 a.e.t.

Great match which could've been gone either way and we already made assumptions which would be the penalty taker for us in the shootout.

And then in the 119th minute the 0-1. :eeek (the 0-2 in the "extra time of the extra time" :D by del Piero wasn't relevant anymore). We had in Jens Lehmann a good penalty saver (ok you had Gigi Buffon in goal the best keeper of the tournament but Lehmann was also voted in the tournaments team behind Gigi).
We had a good team in 2006, the start of the golden generation, which reached every semi-final then from 2006 until 2016 in World Cups and Euros plus 2 finals, one in Euro 2008 (lost against Spain) and World Cup 2014 (won against Argentina).

The 2nd most painful loss against Italy was in 2012, also semi-final against your guys. Here our coach Löw made a tactical mistake which cost us dearly. I only say Mario Balotelli, 2 goals from this prick was too much for us fans ;). the 1-2 from Özil in stoppage time through penalty was only cosmetics.

The final loss in the WC 1982 however was mostly accepted under us fans because first Italy was simply better and second most of us were still pissed off about the Germany vs Austria match, the "shame of Gijon". We should've hammered the Austrians out of the World Cup (especially after they did the same with us in 1978, which is still celebrated in Austria ;) ) but instead we let them off the hook with only a 1-0 win and so they could qualify behind us as #2 and Algeria had to pay for it. Never ever was I so ashamed about a performance of our team, although we won. Anyway, most German fans (me included) couldn't give a toss anymore about the final loss.

When your opposition plays with 4 attackers and Pilo you're sure to concede a goal or 2.

We nearly always get a goal or two against Italy (even last summer in the Nations League when we were already 5-0 ahead we conceded 2 at the end).

What I meant was that the goal was in the 119th minute, that was really heartbreaking. When you already are in preparation for the eventual penalty shootout. And I'm still convinced that we would have a good chance to win this penalty shootout. We only lost 1 shootout so far and that was our first in the Euro 1976 final (where a certain later Bayern Munich president shot a ball on the moon). The 0-2 in the 121st minute was then only logical after we had to open up everything in these last seconds. It was our home World Cup and the begin of 10 wonderful years (and Löw still good in coaching which he lost after the Euro semi-final loss in 2016. Although we still won the Confederations Cup in 2017 with a B-team we never really recovered and it was way too late since Löw resigned after the Euro 2021. This World Cup is a bit too early for Hansi Flick's team but in 2024 at our home Euro or in 2026 at the next World Cup the many youngsters have enough experience that we're a strong contender again (although I wouldn't mind if we already make a good World Cup 2022 ;) )

Anyway, enough of Germany's traumata against Italy

What I'm trying to say is that the Italian coach subbed on a ton of attackers. They were bound to score a goal
It's like if Bayern had Gnabry, Coman, Sane, Mane, Choupo-Moting, Tel, Muller on the pitch at the same time.

yeah, I got it already the first time ;). All I was saying was that we could hold them goalless for 119 minutes (plus we had enough chances ourselves to score) and then booom, all of a sudden it's over. That's one of the most heartbreaking losses I was watching. A world cup semi-final at home decided in the last minute of the extra time. Brutal.

OK, maybe we could have been losing the penalty shootout (although I doubt it) but at least there you have some chances to react to the opponents score. Anyway, can't describe it better. You must have witnessed it to feel the pain we had there. It was our home World Cup, it was semi-final, we could've been winning it......anyway, as I already said in my last post, enough of this. After all it's the Serie A thread and not Germany vs Italy historic matches ;)

Serie A will adopt this WC system of super-additional times starting from January.

I'm not a big fan of this super addtional times actually at this World Cup, it's still random how much added time is given.

If they want to make it correctly, they should introduce a start-stop watch like in other sports (e.g American Football), that stopps the game time whenever the match is stopped (due to injury, ball out etc....) and I'm not even sure if I would like that in football either ;)

edit: Just tried to check if it is also planned for the Bundesliga. So far I couldn't find official statements, only some opinions that it should be introduced here, too. Let's see

Lots of epic football history on this page. Great stuff guys!

If we are going to talk about trauma, the generation of my parents are sincerely traumatized by the French 1982 elimination by Germany in Seville most notably with Schumacher lunging into Battiston and not getting a card. I think my generation the trauma is Italy 2006 but even more telling as the shoot-out defeat was in the final. Canal Plus made a documentary about the Seville defeat and you can tell the wounds are still raw!

I wasn't born yet in 1982, I don't know that match. Yes, I know we won and I've seen all our goals throught the years, but that's it :D

If we talk about "trauma", the trauma of my parents is USA 94 and that Baggio's penalty. I'd put "our" 1990 WC for second and then Euro 2000 (but I remember that as well, even if I was young).

My very first big trauma was Italy-Sweden 4 years ago, when we didn't qualify for the first time. It's something I'd never thought of. Our qualification since then was simply taken for granted.

Then I'd say Italy-South Korea in 2002 when we had the best team of the tournament with Brazil and one of the best team ever.

Euro 2012 was sad but we played against aliens, I didn't expect to win.

Didn't expect you to knock Germany out in 2012 either but Balotelli was in a great mood. Has to be one of the most impressive individual performance in an international tournament I've ever seen. Up there with Zidane v Brazil in 2006.

Just finished watching Serie A highlights of the first round after the World Cup. What a relief that a title contender was able to defeat Napoli in their home matchup. Dimarco centering to Dzeko for the header and the 1-0 win reduces Napoli’s huge pre-WC lead to 5 points. To 8 over Inter.) A draw would have been like a loss to Inter. Make this race interesting!

Other than Haaland and Salah, the player I missed most in Qatar was Ciro Immobile. At age 32, pretty tragic that he and Italy lost their WC chance against frigging North Macedonia. Still, he’s quite the finisher, and his early goal for Lazio was a beaut. But he plays for a somewhat mediocre club to my eye, and plucky little Lecce came back for the 2-1 surprise win.

Spezia surprise Atalanta in a crazy see-saw 2-2 draw, and Sassuolo effup totally by losing to horrific Sampdoria at home.

Finally…alas…my Udinese lads continue their struggles after their glorious season start. Despite far more chances, they only draw bottom-half Empoli at home. They were without spark plug Deolefeu, but it should not have mattered had the other lads just kick the ball on target. Next up: at Juve. If Vlahovic remains out of their lineup, maybe Udinese can earn a good road draw. (And can Sampdoria turn their latest success into a shocking home win over Napoli this weekend?!)
