Kick off at 12:30 instead of 3pm.

Surely VDB and McTom should be playing in the middle?

    I'd play this;

    Henderson
    Dalot Varane Maguire Shaw
    McTominay Pogba
    Sancho Bruno Donny
    Ronaldo
Agree with @StretfordEnd that Henderson last night reminded us why he's better than Dave, despite the good start Dave has had. Thought Dalot had a really good game last night so I'd keep him in but I think it'll be AWB. Pogba deep to partner McTominay as Fred has been crap so far this season, VDB is awol positionally and Matic played the whole match last night. Donny on the left to take advantage of his movement to try and unlock Villa who I think will just try to hit us on the counter, we were far too static last night.

He's the attacking cm in a double pivot with a defensive cm next to him. Do you really not know how that works? In a 4231, either cm is going to play predominantly on the side of the pitch in which they're deployed. Donny is wider because ole had us playing that way. He isn't a defensive powerhouse, but there's a difference between playing in a midfield two and being a defensive midfielder. Look at soucek's heat maps, for instance. The guy lives on the right side just either side of the halfway line, while Rice hangs back. When one goes forward, the other hangs back.

I didn't want to get into another argument with you, man.

VDB played well last night. I get the impression certain players will get criticism no matter how good they play or improve.

What's this, a cm playing in the centre? :eeek

I thought he played well last night too, but that doesn't mean that he's not positionally suspect when playing cm

Of course you pick the heat map from the match where west ham parked the bus. look at fornals (their wide midfielder) and even benrahma in that same match.

United will grind out another 3 points purely because of attacking talent again.
    My prediction:

    Man United 2 Villa 1

He did ok at best, seems more like people want to validate their hunches by exaggerating what he offers.
I didn't think he played bad, but positionally he was suspect and I would not want him playing there in a vital league game or Europe.
It was very clear he is a more fluid attacking player being forced into a disciplined role

I guess a few yards is the difference. You're right. I have been humbled and you are the king of everything.

you need to also take a look at where lingard and dalot played yesterday. lingard spent most of his time in the middle of the pitch, just outside their box, even though he was on the wing. dalot hugged the touch line. donny has to be an option for either of them, depending on the situation.

someone said it earlier; he is constantly moving and making himself an option in order to keep the ball moving and create something. towards the end of the match, he was overlapping more and more on the right. i'm struggling to believe that you think he's just doing that on his own without instruction. and it's not a hunch, either, as someone else said. believe it or not, some people watch other leagues and donny has been someone i've wanted at united for years. he's not going to be a defensive wall, but that seems to be what ole wants to do with our midfielders, even though pogba and even mctominay aren't really defensively solid, to say the least. fred doesn't even warrant mentioning at this point, since even donny has done better than he has this season from a defensive standpoint and on top of that, offers far more from an attacking mindset.

at the crux of all of this, is your insistence that donny is constantly out of position, with only 2 starts so far this season and where he hasn't actually been out of position in the first place. give him first team minutes to actually, you know, get match fit and gel with his teammates and we'll have a better sample size to judge him on. you're taking your very subjective view on what a positional requirement for him is and forming an entire judgment on it, while completely ignoring what he does on the pitch, or that fact that it's more than what players who normally play in that position offer. you just seem to have a specific requirement for him and i have to say, you're like the only person i've seen criticize donny for the match yesterday. he played a brilliant ball to greenwood which, had greenwood put away, you wouldn't have anything to say.

Yes, if a player is predominantly playing within the boundaries of the 18 yard box he's playing centrally, either as a defender, midfielder or a striker, if a player is predominantly playing outside the boundaries of the 18 yard box he's playing as a winger or full back. Yesterday Donny was predominantly found to be on the wing, as shown by his heat map, instead of centrally like you'd hope from a cm, hence he is positionally suspect. I'm glad to enlighten you.
