Charlton Athletic would like to announce the attendance at today's match versus Wigan Athletic was 23,600.

On a personal level I would like to thank my parents, god, but most of all that fine chap Steve Foster whose persistent 'encouragement' has allowed us to achieve this amazing feat.

    End.

Try playing infront of a crowd of 26,000 plus, then you'll know you've made it.

    Forever in Millwall's shadow.

I thought Boro were big time but this just puts it all into perspective, does that crowd get you into the UEFA cup ?

We are now in the 20,000 club! We are nearly as big as the almighty Brighton!

    Charlton a 'mere' 8th (Brighton 50th).

    From Wiki;

Records correct as of 28 April 2012

Rank Club Attendance Stadium Opposition Competition Date
1 Manchester City 84,569 Maine Road Stoke City FA Cup 6 FA Cup sixth round 3 March 1934
2 Manchester United 83,260 Maine Road Arsenal League 1 First Division 7 January 1948
3 Chelsea 82,905 Stamford Bridge Arsenal League 1 First Division 12 October 1935
4 Everton 78,299 Goodison Park Liverpool League 1 First Division 18 September 1948
5 Aston Villa 76,588 Villa Park Derby County FA Cup 6 FA Cup sixth round, first leg 2 March 1946
6 Sunderland 75,118 Roker Park Derby County FA Cup 6 R FA Cup sixth round replay 8 March 1933
7 Tottenham Hotspur 75,038 White Hart Lane Sunderland FA Cup 6 FA Cup sixth round 5 March 1938
8 Charlton Athletic 75,031 The Valley Aston Villa FA Cup 5 FA Cup fifth round 12 February 1938

We are 42nd with 41,097 at the old White City Stadium but there are accounts (not the 'year end' type) that QPR had around 80,000 during an FA Cup game against Southampton at our old Park Royal ground (had it's own train station too) just before the First World War but as records weren't held it was never verified. I'm sure there probably have been other big attendances too around the country prior to the 1930's that never got accounted for.

Nice, for us anyway, to see that QPR appear twice as the visitors for the home teams highest ever.

71 - Gillingham 23,002 Priestfield Stadium Queens Park Rangers FA Cup 3 FA Cup third round 10 January 1948
76 - Milton Keynes Dons 19,506 Stadium:mk Queens Park Rangers FA Cup 3 FA Cup third round 7 January 2012 (I was there!)

Also intersteing to see how many of these are FA Cup games. Just goes to show how the romance of the FA Cup has been killed off the last couple of decades.
