Well he has had a good pre season and seems to fit this new system quite well but I'd snatch their hands off at that price.
It's an outrageous price It's the same money we sold Ake for, who was 25 and proven as a good Premier League player...fair play to Wolves if it's true.
How is it reckless spending?. If it was Liverpool buying this kid no-one would be batting an eyelid. He’s a very good player, and £30m seems to be the norm for a very good player now.
No it isn't! We've bought players at Champions League clubs for less! Raphinha was 17m, for example. It's outrageous for a player with one good Championship season behind him.
Exactly. Liverpool have just spent £80m on striker that’s had one good season in a donkey league, that no one had even heard off till Liverpool played them and now he’s getting compared to Haaland FFS.
And?. Your using one example!. Not that I’m sh***** on Liverpool here but you got Raphinha for £17m and they got Keita for £50m. Like I said, a player is worth what the selling club says their worth.
I think the difference is Liverpool/the top 6 in general can spend big money on a player that doesn’t need to make an immediate impact. And they won’t necessarily be expected to do so. You guys need players good enough to go straight in your team. Mgw and Onana are not the finished article (though could well turn out to be very good players), and if you’re gonna spend up to 75m on the pair they need to hit the ground running, based on your last season. It could work out but they are risky signings based on where you guys are currently at
Okay, but on the flip side we get criticised for both approaches. We buy new young players and it’s a negative. We buy experienced older players and it’s a negative.
Chuffed that this one came through. An area we really needed strengthening, and by all accounts a bit of a coup.
I’m not criticising, they are potentially very good signings, especially onana. My point is this particular window may not be the best timing to blow your budget on potential. It’s a risk is all I’m saying Unfortunately we all have to do that outside of the current top 6/CL teams
The notion you have no choice but to spend big due to the state of the market is a big lie. Brighton's record transfer = £20m Brentford's record transfer = £17m
There are plenty of examples. None of our signings were £40m, especially not for somebody with as little experience. You can (and teams regularly do) get quality players with some top flight and European cup experience for £20-25m or less. Even this summer, I am much happier with signing Aaronsson and Sinisterra for about 20m each (both of whom have been performing well in European cup competitions) than I would be with paying close to 40m for a Championship player with potential. There's no way this is an ordinary deal. It's the English PL tax being paid by a club looking increasingly desperate. Saying that "a player is worth what the selling club says they are worth" doesn't make it normal.
or you can go and get Moise Keane, Tosun, Klassen, Sandro Ramiro …. Etc who all looked like good signings on paper. Morgan Gibbs White for £30m isn’t as bad as people are making out.
