As Garrincha said when he felt the need to butt in, we’ve got the same owner. Brighton are owned by lifelong fan Tony Bloom. He’s taken us from third division to the brink of European football as well as building us a new stadium and training ground. He also bought USG in 2018, presumably to give any signings who didn’t qualify for a work permit here somewhere to play until they could get one. This has worked really well, for example Karou Mitoma who has 8 goals in his last 15 games was on loan there last season. USG actually have a really interesting history though, they were the most successful club in Belgium winning 11 titles in 30(ish) years between 1900 & 1930. However they’d gone nearly 50 years without top flight football when Bloom took over. They got promoted back to the top division in the 20/21 and then finished top of the league in their first season back despite having one of the smallest budgets in the league (unfortunately they didn’t win the title due to Belgiums weird league system). So whilst it’s partly down to having the same chairman and the fact that their success makes them even more efficient at getting players a work permit, it’s also partly because their rise is such a fairytale story. A once dominant club returning after decades away and competing on a shoestring budget in a crumbling old ground that they can’t play their Europa games in. And its alright Dirk, you’ll learn about us when we’re smashing German clubs in Europe next season
Missed the game yesterday so can’t give a proper review on it. But I said I’d be happy to get out of Lisbon without defeat and we’ve done that. Disjointed performance by all accounts but that comes when you shuffle the deck. Hopefully we’re a bit closer to a stronger line up next week as we have a home game in the league three days later instead of a tricky away match this weekend.
Thanks for the detailed explanation, Bleeds Didn't know that the Belgians had such a glorious history. Indeed a fairytale story and I nearly want them to advance in Europe now....but only nearly And the year after that Brighton will come to the Volkspark when HSV is back in Europe (that would be another fairytale story like USG )
Expecting us to be a bit stronger for the second leg as our next league match is at home. I'd personally go with the following: Turner Tomiyasu Holding Gabriel Zinchenko Jorginho Odegaard Xhaka Saka Jesus Martinelli I'm sure Arteta will pick something different.
Seeing sporting in their hooped socks makes me annoyed that Arsenal ditched them. Such an iconic piece of kit.
He’s got competition with our very own Nuno Santos who scored an arguably even better one at the weekend! Tremendous goal from Pote. I really thought we’d roll over away from home but it’s been a very encouraging performance so far
Can’t be many people who have had a better week than he’s having currently. His horse absolutely pisses the race its in, winning him a tidy little sum. He had bet £400,000+ on that horse to win too. His football team beats their biggest rivals. His other team reaches the EUROPA league 1/4 final… just got to beat Grimsby now.
