As long as they're working properly you can definitely change at East Croydon and it's one stop to either Selhurst or NJ.

It's actually really easy!

All you need to do is get a train from Brighton to East Croydon (the fast one takes 35 minutes and goes direct), then change and go to either Norwood Junction or Selhurst. Both are just one stop after East Croydon. You should find one of these trains on platform 4 @ East Croydon. It'll be either the London Bridge or the London Victoria train (just check the electronic board to make sure where it stops).

If you check http://www.southernrailway.com and book in advance you can usually get some cheap singles.

If you want a drink pre-match I would recommend Norwood Junction as it has more pubs/shops.
