Exactly , but hoping & wanting another team to be relegated because they're dodgier with their finances than yourselves isn't great but also with clubs who've been promoted in 1st & 2nd season back into Premier should be shown more leniency .

Anyone know what's happening with Man City yet , or will it be 2030 before they're let off or punished ?

If clubs break rules and stay up, and others that didn't break those rules go down at their expense, I think it is totally fair to wish relegation on the cheating team.

    Good luck with it .

Need to be rule changes to make teams coming up from the Championship being able to operate on more of an even keel otherwise the Premier League will just become an ' inclusive club ' if it's not already with the 3 who come up each year going straight back down .

Other than Ipswich in the Championship all the money clubs in all 5 English leagues including the Conference are leading the way , & they say money doesn't matter , yeah right !

I'm not so sure - we broke the rules that were in place and got what I thought felt a fair deduction of 4pts. I'm no lawyer though.

Last time Posh were in the Championship we were the only club who made a profit of around £1 million that season whereas others lost around £30-£40 million & we were relegated .

And which rules did those clubs break? As far as I recall two clubs were punished (and one went down) the last time Peterborough got relegated.

City , Liverpool , Leicester , Leeds , Derby , Wrexham , Chesterfield as well as the above all able to blow others out of the water transfer fees / wages , the old saying , " you get what you pay for in life " , god knows whats happened to Man U then ;)

They already had their points deduction at the start of the season Derby / Reading & which was also added to .

The clubs losing £30/£40 million that season may not have broken rules but also pointing out the unsustainability regarding football as a whole , needs a massive shake up & a 0 taken off the end of wage packets etc...

I don't think there's any ideal system but all I'd say to this is that newly promoted clubs that breach these rules have likely benefitted from overspending in the lower division.

Forest are facing a points deduction for losses also made in the Championship but they've now been able to reap the financial rewards of Premier League football (which they've also spent recklessly). They can continue to reap the rewards if they stay up too.

Nottingham Forest the latest club in crosshairs over football short-termism | Nottingham Forest | The Guardian

Forest made a £35m loss in their promotion season. They spent big to get promoted, the idea they now deserve leniency is weird to me. They've potentially taken a promotion place at the expense of another club who weren't as careless with their club.

Ultimately the gamble paid off and Forest can now reap the Premier League riches but I don't really think the answer to Premier League clubs spending stupidly is to encourage leniency and allow newly promoted clubs to do the same.

Money has ruined the competitiveness in the sport. I absolutely sympathise with that but all clubs should be sustainable. Their survival shouldn't be dependent upon an owner who can walk away at any given minute without a hint of repercussion for their actions. The good owners in the game are balanced out by the bad owners that can devastate a 100-150 year old club in a very short space of time.

What I am seeing is that everton are laying claim to the fact that it was one big big bad year due to covid and you nailed us on it. Theres no club who could get that back officer I swear yet then posted a massive yearly loss with players ebing bought and sold.

Whats happened here is everton got punihsed a year too late last time round and have now been punished for the same year as forest but forest got double the punishment "for some reason".

thats not true. they spent big after being promoted to stay up and did so at the expense of some other club this season. (if you knowing breach the rules to suruve in one year you won;t get punished til the year after anyway) their only sin seems to be not having spend enough to get up to 50points and laugh.

Everton lost 89mil last season? it seems to me that mitiagtes any talk of a reduced sentance. They should have had points off last season and leicester would have survived but for the incompetence of the system at play. I think 2 never mind 6 would have relegated them last year.

Just because the system has been poor is no reason to just give 2 now. But if not two then it should have been 4 and they'd stay up still given the league as it stands.

That doesn't really exist in the championship because the golden apple of the premier league is too enticing.

Even frugal Luton in 21/22 had a wage:turnover spend of over 100%. I haven't looked at their promotion season to be generous to them, as that's probably worse on paper due to promotion bonuses.

And it's not just Luton - apparently the championship overall has a wage spend that exceeds the total turnover, and has done for most of the last decade or so at this point

What's not true? Forest were loss-making in the Championship, that's a fact. Yes they spent big after promotion too but they were spending big to get to this level in the first place - they made a £35m loss in their promotion season, Championship clubs should not be making losses of that size. Ultimately the gamble was worth it though because they got promoted.

My only point was to that of the showing leniency to newly promoted clubs, some of these clubs have already reaped the rewards of promotion. I find it weird people want to show them further leniency.

The rules should be consistent, that's the bigger problem. If you breach the rules - this is the penalty.

Fair enough. I don't know enough about each club individually, only those that have been punished.

The Championship is a mess financially though, that isn't surprising given the rewards of getting promoted and even the rewards in getting relegated from the Premier League. I don't know if the parachute payments still happen but I'm not surprised clubs risk it all for the Premier League payday.

Ultimately football is a mess from top to bottom in this country. You even see the spending of clubs in non-league getting in to the football league and it sometimes doesn't make for much better reading.

Hopefully regulators can come in and fix some of the problems at least. Clubs are running the risk of extinction with the spending in the game and with the exception of someone like Leicester, generally aren't even getting the glory to justify it. At best some clubs might get a long cup run or a foray in to Europe but even clubs as big as Everton are largely making up the numbers for their recklessness.

They are currently re-writing the FFP rule book so they can "punish" Man City without actually punishing them

Even Leicester only got that opportunity by grossly overspending at the expense of every other Championship club tbf

Not sure how I feel about an independent regulator in all honesty, there's too much money from owners of some clubs being put into our economy for our government to issue sanctions and risk losing those pledges for a game of football. I think its good to protect clubs lower down from looney owners, but the top end has the potential to get very dirty.

It's absurd to be deducting points in the 2nd week of April, any punishments due after the turn of the year should be implemented the following season.

    that can't work.

the punishment is for the 3 precdening seasons including 2022/23 financial year and has to be dealt with in a timely fashion

the clubs have 3 years in theory to get their house in order and had the opportunity to sell or whatever to do so before entering the season they report their accounts for

it shouldn't take so long to get the numbers, look at the numbers and apply rules to apply sanctions.

they should apply as close to the breaks as possible and that is the season directly after breach.

both Everton and forest knew full well they were in breach on 1st July last summer.
