RIP Yosser Hughes. Actor Bernard Hill, best known for roles in Titanic and Lord of the Rings, has died aged 79. He played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film. Another prominent role was as King Théoden in the Rings trilogy. His breakout role was as Yosser Hughes in drama Boys from the Blackstuff. His agent Lou Coulson confirmed to BBC News that he died in the early hours of this morning. A statement from his family is expected soon. Likewise. Boys from the Blackstuff, for me, is one of the finest dramas ever seen on British television and there can have been few more intense performances than that of Bernard Hill as Yosser Hughes.
The scene where he’s in the confessional with Father Daniel and instead of finding peace and solace, the priest takes the piss out of him. It’s as funny as it is heartbreaking.
