As part of the ALL-TIME WORLD CUP, let us build Spain's all-time squad... La Furia Roja! Notes: - We need to build a 23 man squad (3 goalkeepers, 20 outfield players). - The squad should be balanced: (there should be at least two players to cover each position for the chosen formation/tactics). - We aren't just picking the 'greatest' players of a country and then crow-barring them into an XI: we need a balance of picking the best players and the right players for the job. - Every player selected for our squads should have video footage/match-highlights of their ability. Gonna try this out. Don't know many Spain players though. End up with 1 extra midfielder and 1 less defender but nvm All-time Spain Squad 1 Iker Casillas 2 Rafa Gordillo 3 Jose Antonio Camacho 4 Fernando Hierro 5 Carlos Puyol 6 Jose Pirri 7 Michel 8 Xabi Alonso 9 Alfredo Di Stefano 10 Xavi 11 David Villa 12 Andoni Zubizarreta 13 Sergio Ramos 14 Miguel Angel Nadal 15 Andres Iniesta 16 Gerard Pique 17 Pep Guardiola 18 Luis Suarez 19 Luis Enrique 20 Raul 21 Emilio Butragueno 22 Francisco Gento 23 Luis Arconada Formation: 4-2-3-1 Captain: Iker Casillas Vice-captain: Jose Antonio Camacho??? (Only other one of my first team people to have captained Spain before)
My 23 is very similar. I took the 2010 World Cup winning Spanish squad as my template, and made reinforcements: Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas José Ángel Iribar for Víctor Valdés Luis Arconada for Pepe Reina [Would be happy to swap in Zubizarreta too, as he was a great servant throughout the 80s/90s for Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona, Valencia and the national team] Defenders: Fernando Hierro for Raúl Albiol Gerard Piqué Sergio Ramos José Antonio Camacho for Juanfran Carles Puyol for Álvaro Arbeloa Jordi Alba [You opted for Gordillo over Jordi Alba. I was thinking we utilise one of Puyol/Ramos as a defensive right back/right centreback, so took no natural right back. I wanted to fit in Manolo Sanchís, but no room. I also excluded Nadal.] Defensive midfielders and deep lying playmakers: Sergio Busquets Pirri for Javi Martínez Xabi Alonso Luis Suárez for Santi Cazorla [No Busquets? For me he's a must alongside Xavi and Iniesta]. Central playmakers and attacking midfielders: Xavi Hernández Luis Enrique for Juan Mata David Silva Andrés Iniesta Cesc Fàbregas [Really like Luis Enrique's versatility for this squad: defence, midfield and attack.] Forwards and wingers: Fernando Torres Pedro David Villa for Álvaro Negredo Raúl González for Fernando Llorente Francisco Gento for Jesús Navas [Butragueno was a late omission when I realised I had not included Raúl. I went with Pedro's workrate and perfect fit into the system over wingers Míchel and Estanislao Basora]
*I didn't even think of Di Stefano I know he played more caps for Spain, but he'll be registered for Argentina in this All-Time World Cup.
Casillas Carvajal Ramos Pirri Alba Busquets Xavi Iniesta Enrique DiStefano Villa 12. Canizares 13. Laporte 14. Pique 15. Albert 16. Camacho 17. Senna 18. D.Silva 19. Fabregas(Arsenal) 20. Butragueno 21. Raul 22. Pedri 23. Guti Last 2 purely for my pleasure, no Gento and Suarez as they just dont fit the possession theme and im not putting them on the bench thats for sure. A bit cheating with Di Stefano but fits perfectly so thought why not(+ dont think i have him for Argentina!).
